Sport, spirit, splendor, the 1995
Special Olympics World Games
Every four years, thousands of
athletes from around the globe meet
for nine days of international sports
competition- the Special Olympics
World Games. The games bring
together adults and children with
mental retardation to compete in
sport in its purest form.
The theme for the 1995 Special
Olympics World Games- “Sport.
Spirit. Splendor” - captures the
essence of what will be the year’s
largest international sports event.
From July 1 to July 9, 1995, over
6,500 athletes from more than 120
countries will meet for nine days of
competition in 21 sports. The games
will be held in world-class venues, in
the facilities of five host academic
institutions-Albertus Magnus Coll-
ege, the University of New Haven,
Quinnipiac College, Southern
Connecticut State University, and
Yale University-with the support
and backing of the cities of New
Haven, West Haven and Hamden.
Some of the Special Olympics
athletes compete at world-class
levels. Andy Leonard, for example,
is one of the few American athletes
who can lift four times his own
bodyweight. Many Special Olym-
pics athletes participate in organized
sports outside the Special Olympics
organization, on school and

community teams.
A half-million people are
expected to witness the ’95 games in
Connecticut and millions more will
watch them via international
television coverage. Arthur Henick,
Director of Communications, can

Olympics events in every state. He

Search for the best of American Youth
The search is on for America’s
fittest and brightest youngsters.
This summer, three of America’s
Olympic Gold Medal athletes - track
star Jackie Joyner-Kersee, swimmer
Mark Spitz and cyclist Mark Gorski
- will serve as Team Captains for the
first-ever All American IronKids
Team, a select group of youths who
exhibit a balanced, healthy lifestyle
through their academic pursuits,
extracurricular activities and
personal physical fitness and
nutrition.
The All-American IronKids Team
search is being sponsored by
IronKids Bread to celebrate the tenth
anniversary of its fitness and
nutrition programs for children.
These include the largest national
series of biathlons for children and
the “Path to Health & Fitness”
educational program offered free to
teachers of grades four through six.
The All-American IronKids Team
will be comprised of 10 boys and
girls between the ages of seven to
14. To be considered, children
should submit essays between 200

and 300 words detailing their
achievements in three categories-
personal physical fitness and
nutrition, academics and
extracurricular activities. The essays
will be reviewed by the All-
American IronKids Team Captains
and members of the IronKids
Advisory Board-a panel of
childhood health and fitness experts.
“In these essays, we’ll be looking
closely for effort and attitude, not
just the kid who always comes in
first or always makes straight As,”
says Marie Spitz, nine-time Olympic
Gold Medalist for the U.S. Swim
Team. “This program is about giving
everything your best effort, as well
as finding an area that you aren’t the
best in and making an
improvement.”
One area where kids need
improvement is physical fitness and
nutrition. Studies show American
children are less fit today than they
were 20 years ago. Obesity has
increased by 54 percent and 40
percent of children ages five to eight
already have developed at least one
risk for heart disease.
The 10 children selected for the
team and their parents/guardians will
receive all-expense paid trips to
Washington, D.C. where they will
participate in special activities.
For a team application and essay
guidelines, write: All-American
IronKids Team, P.O. Box 190950,
Dallas, TX 75219. Deadline for
essay submissions is August 1,
1994.
