Pioneer Buys New
Fleet 01 Planes
DALLAS—Pioneer Air Lines has
announced L, ■ purchase of a new
fleet of 36-passenger, 270-mile per
j hour twin engine Martin airplanes
and the sale of its entire fleet of
DC-3 planes.
In making (he announcement,
General Robert .1. Smith, Presi-
dent, said Pioneer was the first of
the nation's 18 local service air-
lines to ever purchase postwar,
modern design planes for its oper-
ations.
The new fleet was manufactured
by The Glenn L. Martin Company
of Baltimore, Maryland. The Pio-
neer investment in the planes, nine
spare engines and propellers, oth-
er spare parts. and train-
ing, will be some $4,200,000. Gener-
al Smith said.
In size, speed and design, the
new Pioneer fleet compares with
the Convair and Martin twin-en-
gine planes now in operation on
such airlines as Eastern, Trans-
World. American. Mid-Continent.
Western, Pan American and many
others.
Delivery of the new fleet is ex-
pected in the very near future, and
plans arc to have the planes in
services over the 21-city Pioneer
system in Texas and New Mexico
around mid-year 1952.
