$ Jerusalem Stadium To Be Built Despite Objections From Orthodox |
JERUSALEM [WNS] -
Construction of a 25,000
seat sports stadium in
northern Jerusalem will
begin in two - three months,
despite heavy opposition
from Orthodox residents of
the area, Mayor Teddy
Kollek announced July 10.
He denied the stadium
would destroy the sanctity
of Jerusalem, create noise
and congestion in the
religious neighborhoods or
use municipal funds needed
for other projects. The
Mayor said access roads to
the stadium wil bypass the
religious neighborhoods eli-
minating traffic on the
Sabbath. He said the
stadium, which will take
three years to complete, will
be further away from
synagogues and yeshivot
than existing sports arenas.
He said no municipal funds
are involved since half of
the estimated IL 70 million
cost will come from the
football lottery and the rest
from private donors in
Israel and abroad. Kollek’s
office has received some
5000 letters from the U.S.
and Canada opposing the
stadium, some threatening
teh Mayor’s life and many
saying they will stop any
contributions to Israel if the
stadium is built. Mean-
while, Kollek has received a
petition with 45,000 signa-
tures endorsing the project.
