Jewish Family Service has done it again! Through their
concerted efforts, many senior citizens were able to get
assistance with their rent as of Oct. 1, 1976. Many of
them were eligible for Section VIII of the Housing Code,
but the individual landlord must be willing to participate
in this program. After much work on the part of Jewish
Family Service and with the indispensable help of Milton
Tobian of the American Jewish Committee, a landlord of
a large apartment complex, where many of our elderly
people live, agreed to participate in the program.
Workers from the Housing Authority came to the Senior
Citizens' Drop In Center of JFS and helped the people
make their applications with the assistance of Bunny
Radman and Anita Sanders of JFS. To date,
approximately 21 people have been approved for the
program. Rents for some were dropped anywhere from
$50 per month to over $100 per month with the
government paying the difference. This is another
example by which an agency can provide a service by
advocacy. It is a means of enabling people to use the
system that they might not otherwise be able to plug
into.
