Morrocan Called Last
of Good Jewish Boxers
NEW YORK — A recent' team, losing only once in 44
issue of Sports Illustrated fights, and was chosen for
magazine described “the the Pan-Arab Games when
last of the good Jewish
fighters,” middleweight
boxer Max Cohen.
Cohen, the middleweight
champion of France, is a
character according to the
‘article.written by John Vin-
ocur. A Morrocan Jew, his
family now lives in Beer-
sheba.
Vinocur writes: “In spite
of his name, Cohen made
the. Mbrrocan amateur
he was 20.
“ ‘Everybody screamed
it was a scandal,’ he re-
calls. ‘How could a Jew
compete in an Arab com-
petition. Worse was that
everybody was afraid I’d
win.’ ”
Cohen beat a Lebanese
and a Sudanese to reach the
semi-finals. Friends sug-
gested he withdraw from
ble trouble. He won, and the
Palestinian he was to face in (
the championship bout
withdrew rather than fight
Cohen.
“And Max suddenly was a
one of a kind phenomenon: a
Jewish Pan-Arab Games
gold medalist.”
Cohen has had his ups
and downs, and now at 34
his career is coming to a
close. But he has been of-
fered a shot at the world
middleweight title in the
near future, and the world
expects to hear more from
Max Cohen.
