A TRIBUTE FOR ELLA
The Fort Worth Committee for the State of Israel Bonds has
ably chosen one of its most outstanding leaders to be honored
at a Testimonial Dinner at Congregation Ahavath Sholom this
Saturday evening.
That person is Mrs. Elias B. Brachman, affectionately known
as Ella to 'her countless friends across the nation.
Ella Brachman has many other names, however.
She has been known as “Mrs. Hadassah” in the great
Southwest.
She earned this deserving accolade because of her untiring
efforts in behalf of helping the sick and homeless in the State
of Israel.
Her activities do not start or stop with that great nation. A
devoted citizen to Fort Worth, she has given of herself unselfishly
to and for the causes of humanity in her community as a worker
•and member of most of the cultural and civic organizations. She
is a member of the National Council of The Jewish Distribution
committee and a founder of Yeshiva University Medical School.
Well remembered are her tireless efforts on behalf of the
resettlement and rehabilitation of refugees into this country fol-
lowing the aftermath of Hitler’s madness—World War II.
To recite all her accomplishments would be impossible — be-
cause people like Ella do great work silently behind the scenes
— work that never reaches the printed page. But it’s work that
is done conscientiously and with valor.
Presently Mrs. Brachman is treasurer of the Dan Danciger
Jewish Community Center, a board member of the Fort Worth
Jewish Federation, and on the board of the Southwest Region of
Hadassah, which she has also served as vice-president. She has
been a past board member of the National Council of Jewish Wo-
men and the Ladies Auxiliary of Congregation Ahavath Sholom.
It is highly fitting that the State of Israel Bond Organization
made this choice for a tribute.
Ella Brachman has always had a close bond with people —
and for them.
We offer our sincere congratulations to Mrs Brachman.
We wish her great success.
We know many of her friends will be on hand to congratu-
late her personally.

ON PRAYERS FANS
ANTI-SEMITISM
NEW YORK, (JTA) — The
role played by Jewish organiza-
tions ia “securing and hailing”
the recent Supreme Court decis-
ion, outlawing the recitation of a
prayer in the public schools, was
criticized here this week by a
prominent New York rabbi, Dr.
Immanuel Jakozovits, spiritural
leader of the Fifth Avenue Syn-
agogue, and former Chief Rabbi
of Ireland, who said that the
positions taken by Jewish organ-
izations have “added dangerous
fuel to the flames of anti-Se-
mitism.”
Dr. Jakobovits spoke at a de-
bate sponsored by the Graduate
School of Education of Yeshiva
University. Will Maslow, nation-
al executive director of the A-
merican Jewish Congress, de-
fended his organization’s role in
supporting the prayer ban.
Rabbi Jakobovits said that the
Jewish espousal of the “anti-
prayer” position was incompat-
ible both with the traditional
teachings of Judaism and with
the long-term interests of A-
merican Jewry. “By allying
themselves with the rampant
forces of atheism and secular-
ism,” 'he declared, “these organi-
zations were bound to expose
the Jewish community to the
charge of undermining the re-
ligious foundations of our so-
ciety, whatever the constitution-!
legalities in support of such'
a position.”
Mr. Maslow replied that, dur-'
ing their 2,000 years of disper-
sion, the Jews have never en-
joyed full equality in any na-
tion with an established church. /
“America’s great contribution to )
the art of government and the
creation of civil harmony,” he
declared, was the separation of
church and state. Every breach

Led by Joseph Meyerhoff, United Jewish Appeal
General Chairman (second from right, above) a
group of American Jewish leaders, part of the
recent UJA 8th Study Mission to Europe and
Israel, recently visited the site of the notorious
Bergen-Belson concentration camp to pay their
respects to the many thousands of Jewish men,
women and children who perished there at the
hands of the Nazis.
Memorial services, conducted by Norbert Prager,
a former inmate of Bergen-Belsen, were solemnly
attended by some 35 leaders including, in the
above photo, Joseph Meyerhoff, UJA General
Chairman — center — and Fred Forman, UJA
National Chairman, at the right. In the photo,
upper right, as shown from left to right; Charles
H. Gershenson, General Chairman of the 1962
Allied Jewish Campaign of the Jewish Welfare
Federation of Detroit; Joseph D. Shane, UJA
National Campaign Cabinet Member and Samuel
Haber, Ass’t. Director, Joint Distribution Commit-
tee Overseas Operations. In the photo, lower right,
James L. Permutt, UJA National Campaign Cabi-
net Member, at left.
The 8th United Jewish Appeal Study Mission
surveyed conditions facing immigrants to Israel
and Jewish refugees in Europe, who are aided and
sustained by the programs of the UJA’s benefi-
ciary agencies, in advance of the UJA’s 1963
campaign. The Mission also marked the unofficial
opening of the UJA’s 25th Anniversary Year, to
be observed throughout the coming year.
