Again Mr. Hiller parenthesized:
“Nor do I quarrel with anybody who
changes his religion by comoulsion
; of his conscience. I despise only those
■ who change for the sake of social
! prestige.”
: “But the Shamdale Country' Club
I was more particular as to origins than
I the church. The church in Christian
| beneficence took any supplient who
came to its door. The Shamdale
Country Club looked into the remote
j beginnings of an applicant’s life.
“The club’s screening committee
j gave a report that startled every mem-
| her of the board: The Witherspoons
j were Jews to start with. They used
j to be Weinstock, Weinberg, Weinstein
or something.’
“The remaining years of the With-
eringtons were passed in utter deso-
| lation. They had no place in the
| Shamdale club community, no place
among the Jews from whom they had
separated themselves. I could feel
very sorry for them and one day — I
used to meet him in business — I, in
the uninhibited way I have, said to
him: ‘Witherington, it seems your
father was right when he said that
the fraternity of the people who came
from Sinai with the Commandments
was the biggest and best.’
“Finally, I am happy to report
something cheerful about the life of
Mr. Witherington. He has at last
achieved the social position he de-
sired — in death. As an old friend
of his father I thought I should at-
tend his funeral. I saw him lowered
into his grave in the Christian ceme-
tery where Christian generosity would-
n’t think of blackballing him. God
rest him at last.
“And that brings me back to Ed-
die Cantor. How much happier the
life of Mr. Cantor publicly a JefW and
proud of the identity than that of
Witherington who lived like a fright-
ened mouse in the shadows. For
Cantor, to be a Jew, has been an
identity of service to the world as well
as to his own people; at 60 he was
an honored and beloved man in the
country.”

SURVEY SHOWS MORE THAN
HALF OF JEWS LIVE IN
WESTERN HEMISPHERE
NEW YORK (WNS) The twentieth
century has seen a virtually unpre-
cedent shift in the distruction of
the world’s Jewish population, with
the percentage of world Jewry in
the Western' Hemisphere rising from
10.9 percent in 1900 to 52.9 percent
in 1951, it was disclosed this week
in a study issued by the Institute
of Jewish Affairs of the World Jewish
Congress.
Wars and anti-Jewish terror in
Europe, the birth of Israel and other
factors led to the migration of over
4,000,000 Jews since the turn of the
centrury, thus changing the entire
Jewish demographic picture accord-
ing to the study entitled “The Posi-
tion of the Jewish People Today.”
The report, prepared by Dr. Jacob
Lestschinsky, noted statistician and
demographer, showed that the Jew-
ish population of the Americans has
risen from 1,200,000 in 1900 to 6,-
000,000 in 1951, while the Jewish
population of Europe has fallen from
8,900,000 to 2,700,000 in the same
period.
Of the Jews in the Western Hemis-
phere, over 5,000,000 live in the
United States, while 400,000 reside
in Argentina, nearly 200,000 in Cana-
da, 120,000 in Brazil and another
150(000 in 18 other Latin-American
countries.

SAYS THERE ARE MORE NAZIS
IN GERMAN FOREIGN OFFICE
THAN UNDER HITLER
BONN (WNS)—Radio commentator
Helmut Hammerschmidt charged here
this week in a broadcast that there
were “more Nazis now than the
Foreign Ministry even had under
Hitler.” —-
In addition, Hammerschmidt de-
clared that some of them were con-
nected with the persecution of Jews
in the occupied countries. He esti-
mated that about 85 per cent of the
personnel in Chancellor Adenauer’s
new Foreign Ministry were former
Nazis. While the Bonn Government
has made no official reply to the at-
tack, one government official was
reported to have said it was necessary
“to start our new foreign service
with some experienced people” since
“you can’t take a bunch of carpenters
and try to make diplomats out of
them.”
