Plain Talk
... by Alfred Segal
By Alfred Segal
I BOOST A CANDIDATE
My good old fiiend Mr. Shabbosdeckel was asking, “Segal, what
do you think about my announcing myself for President of the U. S.?”
Shabbosdeckel, candidate--for President. Shabbosdeckel a man with a
decent education. Shabbosdeckel who has made an honorable success
as lawyer. Shabbosdeckel who has been actively concerned with civic
affairs on the higher levels. Shabbosdeckel who all his life has tried
to be among the best of citizens. What do you say, Segal?”
Before I could reply, he went on: “Yes, Shabbosdeckel, a good
Jew! Shabbosdeckel who as Jew has tried to live by the righteous
teaching of the Old Testament, and has fairly well succeeded in that.
Shabbosdeckel who stands high in his community. ... I might say as
morally and as publicly high as other candidates who hope to be
President. Shall I become a candidate, Segal?
„ “You know me so well, Segal.
Am I not as bright and good a
man as those others who want to
be President? What’s there wrong
with my own ambition to become
nationally and historically distin-
guished.”
Mr. Shabbosdeckel was winking
happen then? Mind you, the
candidate might be a Jew who
stood as high as Moses or the
prophet Isaiah. As such a person
he would be standing even beyond
the height of other candidates . . .
a man whose head would reach up
... , . ,, toward God Himself. Oh, that
at me, as if he already knew the I wou]d be a candidate,.,
answer. I couldn t feel like turn-
ing regal and good Mr. Shabbos-
deckel down. I replied: “Could
there be a brighter and nobler
and good Godlier President than
Shabbosdeckel? You really have
everything it takes to be a good
President of the United States.
You have high virtue and fine in-
telligence. As Jew, you’ve lived
high all your life. ... I mean liv-
ing high on the way of a man who
tries to stand as high as Sinai’s
peak ... a greatly good Jew, fit
to be President.”
At this I winked back at Mr.
Shabbosdeckel, and both of us
burst into laughter. He had
brought up the matter of trying
for the Presidency in a discussion
we were having about current na-
tional politics, in particular about
the presidential ambition of one
of the candidates who happens to
be worshipping at an altar that’s
not of majority of Christian al-
tars. He is a Catholic.
“Oh,” I was saying, “to think
that in this free U. S. A. the
mater of a candidate’s religion is
made an issue toward keeping him
out of the presidency. And a very
decent high-minded guy he is. A
bright man and idealistic he would
be sure of nomination if he were
worshipping at some other Chris-
tian altar. But because of his way
of approaching God, it is being
asked, should that man be nomi-
nated for President. And to think,
Mr. Shabbosdeckel, that such an
attitude festers in the U. S. A.,
so widely known as the land of the
Star Spangled Banner.”
Mr. Shabbosdeckel’s head kept
shaking solemnly as I went on
talking along that line, until he
exclaimed, “Now, Segal, suppose
a Jew announced himself as candi-
Mr. Shabbosdeckel confessed
that a man that high might be
hard to find in the world . . .
whether among Jews or Gentiles.
. . . “Suppose you and I look
around for such a person and in
your column, Segal, you can start
a campaign to have him nominated
and elected President of the
United States ... a great, good
Jew, whoever he may be. Thus we
would be trying out the conscience
of free America, as it’s widely
called.”
I sat there deeply pondering and
finally: “Suppose Mr. Shabbos-
deckel we nominate Moses who still
stays so brightly alive in the world
on account of his Commandments
... or Isaiah who keeps on speak-
ing in saintliness. Both great
Jews. One of these two! What
voter could scratch either one of
them off the ballot next November
just because of their being Jew-
ish?”
Shabbosdeckel said that either
Moses or Isaiah would make an
ideal candidate, but he thought the
suggestion was just too poetic.
And that’s how it came about that
Mr. Shabbosdeckel proposed him-
self for President.
“Not as, Jew . . . but only as
decent, well-behaved, fairly in-
telligent guy who happens to be
a Jew,” he said, “just to find out
whether the U. S. voters will ac-
cept a Jew . . . even one who tries
to live as high as Moses and
Isaiah.”
Mr. Shabbosdeckel laughed :
“Really, though, I don’t thiink I
can be nominated on elected be-
cause by religion I am Jewish,
their consciences ... to blush with
shame at their religions which
even though I may be walking as
high as Sinai, as you, Segal, your-
date for President? What would self have said about me. But, any-
