Survey Finds that the Ways People
Save and Invest Vary with Age
By Mike Sheff
How do people your age
feel about saving and invest-
ing? It turns out that people’s
savings and spending habits
vary with age. However,
there are also striking simi-
larities in attitudes about in-
vesting among all age groups.
Shearson Lehman Brothers,
in its “Life in America” sur-
vey, has sought to create pro-
files of investors in various
age groups. The survey of
nearly 1,300 Americans na-
tionwide was conducted by
the Roper organization. Fol-
lowing are the findings. See
how you match up with the
profile of the “average” in-
vestor in your age group.
Young Adults
On average, young adults
(ages 18 to 29) save and in-
vest 9.5% of their incomes,
but they feel they could save
18% if they really tried. They
have on average, $4,600 in
assets (stocks, bonds, check-
ing accounts and other liquid
assets). Fifty-four percent
consider themselves conser-
vative, 26% say they are
moderate. Only 6% of young
adults claim they are aggres-
sive with their investments,
although 12% say they are
currently more aggressive
than they were five years ago.

Reach for the Stars r
Rabbi Aryeh Rodin ^
Congregation Ohev I)
Shalom
Rabbi Yaakov
Kamenetsky was one of the
greatest sages of this genera-
tion. Once when he visited a
kindergarten of a yeshiva, he
noticed the mezuzah was
conveniently placed on the
doorpost at the position
which would enable the
young children to kiss it.
Rabbi Kamenetsky com-
mented. “Rather than lower
the mitzvah to the level of
the children better to raise
the children and enable them
to perform the mitzvah prop-
erly. His advice was to place
a chair near the doorway.
What a fundamental Jew-
ish principle this vignette
teaches us. All too often when
we are confronted with the
spiritual challenges of life
we tend to solve the difficul-
ties by diluting the potency
of authentic Torah practice
and substituting an adulter-
ated alternative action. In-
stead as Rabbi Kamenetsky
suggests, we should seek the
means to strengthen our re-
solve and remain faithful to
the pristine truths of our heri-
tage.
In a secular society where
self doubt and low self es-
teem run rampant it is our
holy tradition that fosters self
Rabbi Aryeh Rodin
worth and promotes self dig-
nity. By dint of the fact that
we are created in the image
of G-d we can soar to the
lofty heights of greatness and
tap into the limitless guide
and catalyst to transform this
fantastic potential into real-
ity.
Shortly we will celebrate
the festival of Shavuot. This
holiday commemorates the
giving of the Torah to our
people. How appropriate it is
for us to make a personal
evaluation of our association
with the glorious values and
principles of our religion. Let
us rededicate ourselves to its
study and identify with its
holy precepts. Let us be in-
spired by the message of
Rabbi Kamenetsky to con-
stantly strive to uplift our-
selves and grow from
strength to strength.
