TEXAS JEWISH POST, THURSDAY, MARCH 19, 1998 - IN OUR 52ND YEAR!
On the eve of the Academy Awards, Sunday,
March 22,7:00 p.m. Central Time, A&E Network
will present Hollywoodism: Jews, Movies and the
American Dream, a two hour-documentary film
based on Neal Gabler's best-selling book, An
Empire of Their Own: How the Jews Invented
Hollywood, about the founders of Hollywood and
their bold and enduring vision of the American
dream. Adolph Zukor, founder of Paramount;
Carl Laemmle, founder of Universal; the Warner
Brothers; Louis B. Mayer, founder of MGM;
William Fox of 20thCentury Fox and Harry Cohn,
head of Columbia, were all Jewish immigrants
whose vision transformed a technological novelty
— moving pictures — into the most prolific and
influential art form of the 20th century. In the
process of rein venting themselves as Americans,
they re-invented American culture.
Hollywoodism: Jews, Movies and the American
Dream shows movies from a startling new per-
spective, revealing that classic Hollywood themes
of white picket fences, little guys fighting the
odds, outsiders who become insiders, and the lone
hero riding off into the sunset, were dreams bom
in the oppressed Jewish shtetls of Eastern Europe.
The two-hour film follows the rise and fall of the
movie moguls from turn of the century Eastern
Europe to 20th century America. It traces their
encounters with anti-Semitism when they were
locked out of traditional American businesses,
their success in the nickelodeons, their battles
with the monopolistic Edison Trust and their jour-
ney to California where they founded and ruled
Hollywood for over three decades. The film ends
as the moguls are demoralized by the House Un-
American Committee (HUAC) hearings and ulti-
mately lose control of the studios to which they
had devoted their lives. What endures is the legacy
they left behind - a vision of America that has
conquered the world.
First hand accounts of the moguls’ lives are told
through a series of original interviews with their
children and grandchildren, along with comments
by film historians, critics, actors and producers.
Using never before seen home movies, rare
archival footage and most explicitly, scenes from
many of the greatest movies ever made, Holly-
woodism: Jews, Movies and the American Dream
Rosa Ponselle, Louis B. Mayer and Joan Crawford
tells a story that has never been told before.
Hollywoodism: Jews, Movies and the American
Dream is produced by Associated Producers for
Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and A&E
