For Mordecai Kaplan
Today, June 11, is a profound day in the history of Jews in America. It
is important because Jews all over the world, and especially in the United
States, are celebrating the 100th birthday of Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan,
founder of the Jewish Reconstructionist Movement.
Recently Dr. Kaplan,
who is resident rabbi
and philosopher at the
Hebrew Home for the
Aged in Riverale, N.Y.,
was asked how he
viewed his life’s work
and if he received any
satisfaction from it.
Rabbi Kaplan,
whose efforts have
brought greater
equality for women
and a recognition of
Judaism as a
peoplehood, smiled
and said: “I think I did
about as much as any
one person could do in
a lifetime.”
What about

NEW YORK [WNS] -
Although the number of
Jews leaving the Soviet
Union increased slightly last
m|ath compared to the
prDious month, the general
tr®d is downward,' the
Student Struggle for Soviet
Jewry (SSSJ) reported.
According to SSSJ spokes-
man Glenn Richter, 1141
Jews arrived in Vienna from
the USSR in May while the
fimre for April was 1115. Of
til latest arrivals, 84 per-
ctj|, did not proceed to
Israel.
This was confirmed by
information given the Jew-
ish Telegraphic Agency by
the Intergovernmental Mi-
gration Committee in Gen-
eva which reported that of
the 1141 arrivals in Vienna
last month, only 250 went to
Israel.
Richter noted that during
the 12 months of 1979, the
average monthly figure of
Jewish emigration from the
INDEX
Soviet Union was 4200 and
that in 1980 it dropped to an
average of 1800. The Soviet
authorities “completely con-
trolled the situation,” he
said. He reported that the
“current tactic” ,of Soviet
authorities is to send letters
to “refusniks” saying that
they can emigrate. How-
ever, the date on which they
are ordered to report to the
immigration office is invar-
iably later than the date of
expiration of their exit visas,
Richter said.

Dr. Bailey Smith Re-Elected
President Southern Baptists
Dr. Bailey Smith, presi-
dent of the Southern Baptist
Convention was re-elected
to a second term at its
stormy Los Angeles con-
vention Tuesday.
Smith was opposed in an
unprecedented challenge by
Baylor University’s Chancel-
lor Abner McCall who polled
4,524 votes to Smith’s
victorious 6,934.
Following the election,
Smith, who had said last
year that “God Almighty
does not hear the prayer of a
Jew” and later regretted
and apologized for the
statement at a press confer-
ence in New York, said, “I
Dr. Bailey Smith
don’t see my election as a
victory for either side.”
McCall told a news con-
ference that his candidacy
represented “a protest vote”
against the fundamentalist
wing of the Southern Baptist
Convention.
Since Smith’s New York
press conference, he has
been active in the formation
of a joint Baptist-Jewish
committee to further the
cooperation and relationship
between the religious
groups. He also attended a
special Passover “third
Seder” in April at the home
of the Anti-Defamation
League of B’nai B’rith’s
regional executive director,
Mark Briskman.
