Bat Mitzvah Special for Sonie Green
As Family Joins in Religious Study
After one and one-half
years of intensive weekly
classes, on January 30,
1988 I had the privilege of
being Bat Mitzvah, as an
adult, from Congregation
Shearith Israel.
Finally, 1 could learn
more about our tradition,
our history, our heroes,
our survival. In addition
to this gift of knowledge,
1 have had an opportunity
to get to know Rabbi Jor-
dan Ofseyer and Rabbi
Stephan Weinberg. They
have given me so much of
themselves.
This class has been a
rare chance to have Jews
of all ages and all
backgrounds to come
together, and to be a real
family. For a Jew, lear-
ning and studying never
ends. 1 am living proof of
that.
I was never given the
privilege of formal study
as a young girl growing up
in Russia. My parents did
not encourage me to learn
more about being a Jew.
And yet, 1 had a thirst for
■ Sonie Green
knowledge. 1 wanted to
know more about our
heritage.
My life reads like a
history book in itself. As 1
grew, 1 read, 1 observed, 1
learned the Jewish way of
life. But, 1 never had the
opportunity to go to
religious school, as my
children, grandchildren,
and great-grandchildren
do today. 1 may have
missed a formal religious
education, but 1 am not
going to miss out again—
this second chance.
This class gave all of us
a second chance. It is
never too late, and you
are never too young or too
old to learn. When this
opportunity arose at
Congregation Shearith
Israel, 1 welcomed this
challenge to continue my
Jewish education.
NOTE: Sonie and lrv
Green, husband and wife;
their daughter, Terry
Hyman and gran-
ddaughter, Cheri Lon-
don, all went through this
class and were Bar and
Bat Mitzvah at the same
time.
Happy Manuka
