The results of the strangest-
ever presidential election are
STILL not official, but Texas
Gov. George W. Bush is accel-
erating his transition efforts.
And despite the morass of
legal challenges to the bungled
vote in Florida, a growing num-
ber of Democrats believe the
GOP nominee will be moving to
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue on
January 20.
According to most estimates,
the second Bush administration
will look a lot like the first, with
some key associates of the father
also serving the son. The list is
topped by Dick Cheney-the
Defense Secretary during the
last Bush administration, who is
poised to wield unprecedented
power during a second Bush
administration as Vice President.
Less obvious but no less pow-
erful will be former Secretary of
State James Baker III, whose
"BLEEP the Jews" comment in
the heat of the 1991 battle over
loan guarantees for Israel con-
tinues to rankle many. Baker,
largely invisible during the
campaign, has reemerged to
manage Bush’s legal efforts in
the Honda vote fracas.
“There is a community of
Bush family retainers who will
be probably be called on from
time to time,” said Marshall
Wittman, a senior fellow at the
Hudson Institute, a conservative
think tank. “That includes Baker
and (former National Security
Advisor Brent) Scowcroft. It’s
unclear what the payoff will be
for Baker for pulling the fat out
of the fire in Rorida.”
But Wittman predicted that
Baker will be a senior member
of Bush’s kitchen cabinet, not
an appointed official.
There will be fewer Jews in a
Bush administration than in the
out going one, although
Republican activists say minori-
ties will be well represented.
“He will surprise people with
how diverse his administration
will actually be,’’ said A. Mark
Neuman, a longtime Jewish
Republican activist and White

Erev Hanuka
This is an erev Hanuka issue. Somehow, as I think of the great message of freedom which Hanuka
portrays, I can not escape the solid fact scorched into my memory that this issue of your TJP is dated
December 7, 2000.
Anytime I get close to that day of infamy I realize where I was and what was happening to our nation
at Pearl Harbor. The Japanese, no doubt in connivance and full knowledge of the Nazis were in a
partnership to rule the world.
Those dire days following December 7 were almost a catastrophe to our navy. With cohesive show of
strength our nation, backed by the courage and cooperation of its people, rose to its greatest heights. Not
only did we persevere in beating the Nazis and their multi-millions of German followers but we caused
the surrender of the Japanese and later turned an enemy into a friendly nation.
There is a lesson we can learn from Hanuka.
Antiochus was determined to rid Jews of their religion. He sought to convert them to Greek customs
and relinquish their religion which, at the time, had already been prevalent for thousands of years, and
perhaps many millennia prior to Moses and the Exodus.
The Greeks demanded that Jews cease the ceremony of circumcision, violate Jewish laws and reject
the sabbath.
The threat was that Jews who did not obey the edicts would die. On 15 Kislev 168 B.C.E. the Temple
sanctuary was desecrated.
Like Americans, who loved their country, rose to a call of action in 1941 and following until victory,
Jews under the Maccabees, through small in number, devastated and routed the huge superior Greek-
Assynan forces who were camped in the valley ready to destroy them.
The Maccabees, under their leader, Judah, used a military tactic that is still taught at West Point. The
main ingredient was surprise. The Maccabees built bonfires in the hills surrounding their would-be
conquerors. It gave the appearance that the small Jewish army numbered a hundred or thousand times
their actual composition. At the proper hour, long before sunrise, they descended upon the Greek
Assyrian encampment and overwhelmed them with shouts and noise. This destroyed their defensive
capabilities. They could not combat the determined Jewish forces and were routed and defeated. General
George Washington used the same tactics against the British.
