As We Were Saying
By ROBERT E. SEGAL
right wing Arrows
Both at the precinct and federal
levels, the mischievous thought and
strategic moves incubated by the
John Birch Society and its sym-
pathizers are ripping holes in the
civic fabric of America.
In Missouri, a Methodist minis-
ter recently was transferred after
a bitter internal church dispute
between the clergyman and a group
in his church described by a re-
liable newsman as “a John Birch
faction.” The minister’s crime was
espousal of the United Nations, a
great bulwark against nuclear de-
struction.
In Nantucket, the public school
superintendent has been fired by a
school board dominated by right
wingers; and frightened teachers
in the island school system are
quoted as saying that extremist
elements in the resort area are
"easily swayed by the John Birch
Society.”
Such localized tragedies are com-
monplace now in America. Our own
private prediction is that the mas-
sive fight now shaping up over the
public school system of California
will boil oVer before long, baring
for even the most poorly-informed
the shocking damage done by ex-
tremists passionately convinced
that most of the world is locked
in conspiracy against them.
Meanwhile, in Washington, the
tidal waves of propaganda inspired
in part by the John Birch Society
sweeps over consideration of both
the federal civil rights proposals
and the drive to slap back at the
Supreme Court in Congress by fid-
dling with the First Amendment.
OPPOSES EXTENDING
NAZI CRIMES STATUTE
BONN, (JTA) — Edwin Schule,
the West German prosecutor
heading Nazi war crimes investi-
gation, said this week he was op-
posed to extending the West Ger-
man statute of limitations cover-
ing such crimes. Schule, who
heads the Central Office for the
Investigation of Nazi crimes, said

And Congressman B.F. Sisk of
California—himself a member of
a Protestant fundamentalist sect
—has publicly deplored the barrage
of mail backing the Becker school
prayer amendment. He has noted
that considerable part of the mail
favoring that proposal comes from
rather radical right-wing extremist
groups trying to cloak their po-
litical activities in religion.
In view of these depressing
trends, it is most unfortunate that
Cardinal Richard Cushing of Bos-
ton has apparently been tricked in-
to lashing out at the John Birch
Society. True, he has asked that
his 1960 letter endorsing the right-
wing group be withdrawn from
use. But he has closed out his re-
cent exchange with the body by
concluding that he had made an
unjustified condemnation of the
organization.
The Jesuit magazine, "America,”
noted that the John Birch Society
was "proving to be an instrument
of division and a threat to national
morale. For, to justify its claim
that the country is infiltrated by
Communists, it has embarked on
an unprecedented and arrogant
campaign against all our leaders.”
Perhaps most of those leaders
will Survive despite such bombard-
ment. But our great nation suffers
lamentably. In the provinces, it
sees friend dividing with friend
and support of public school un-
dermined. In Washington, it be-
holds efforts to strengthen civij
rights and secure civil liberties
ridiculed.
A11 of which brings joy and com-
fort to Communists everywhere.
Names Judge Freedman

PHILADELPHIA, (JTA) —
Judge Abraham L. Freedman of
Philadelphia, a Justice of the Uni-
ted States District Court for East-
ern Pennsylvania, has been nom-
inated by President Johnson to the
United States Court of Appeals for
-the third Circuit. He has an ex-
tensive record of Jewish as well as
general community service. When
the Federation of Jewish Chari-
ties was merged with the Allied

agencies and held the post for 3

SAYS NAZISM “NOT DEAD”
BONN (WNS) — In a dedi-
cation ceremony marking the
unveiling of a monument at the
former Dachau concentration
camp near Munich, Dr. Ernst
Bornstein, chairman of the Ba-
varian Association of Jewish
Victims of Nazism and concen-
tration camp invalids, noting
that the “spirit of Nazism” was
“not yet dead in Germany,” de-
clared that “the least we had
expected was that Germany’s
academic youth would learn the
lesson of the past, but German
scientists, building poisonous
rockets in Egypt against our
people, are dashing our hopes.”
a special law would be needed.
Under the p r e s e nt law, Nazi
crimes other than murder cannot
be prosecuted after May 8, 1965,
which will be the 20th anniver-
sary of the capitulation of the
Nazi regime in World War II. The
law applies1 for 30 years for mur-
der cases.
British ‘Fuehrers’
Each Claim Party
LONDON, (JTA)—The battle
of the "fuehrers” of Britain’s
tiny National Socialist party con-
tinued this week with the oppos-
ing leaders each claiming to have
dismissed the other. Secretary
John Tyndall, who' announced
that Colin Jordan had been de-
posed for conduct tending to
“degrade” the “image” of the
party, said: “I have deposed
fuehrer Jordan and seized all
party files. You could call it a
putsch.”
Jordan fired back a statement
from the party’s Notting Hill
district office declaring: “I am
still the leader and this is still
the party’s headquarters.” Tyn-
Pro-Arab Leaflets in Argentina Assail Jews
Anti-Semitic leaflets, shown here, were used In Buenos Airei at
invitations to a pro-Arab League demonstration. This was most recent
stage in long series of anti-Jewish activities that spurred the DAIA*
Argentine Jewry's representa-
tive, body, and the World
Jewish Congress to protest to
President Arturo lllia. The
leaflet screams: "Enough of
Zionist Liesl Enough of camps
for Israel military that offend
our dignity as Argentinians!
Enough of currency evasion
and economic criminals who
bring misery on our people.
Enough of dual nationality.
Join in the big demonstration
for the Arab League." Re-
•ponding, hundreds of youths crowded the Buenos Aires Theatre.
Many were members of anti-Semitic groups, in uniform, mouthing
violent anti-Jewish slogans. See jess jawin Page 1
