The Best Laid Plans
By Elliott J. Blumberg
I originally planned to
write an editorial comparing
the Babylonian Talmud and
“Beyond the Observatory”
written by Harlow Shapley.
Shapley’s group and the an-
cientTalmudic scholars both
used the same system: the
outstanding authorities in
their fields held protracted
discussions to evaluate data,
organize it and to reach con-
clusions, which while not
provable, were based on the
best factual data and struc-
tural framework available.
This was integrated into a
system which they believed
to be valid. Shapley’s book,
written just after World War
II, laid out what was thought
to be the best conception of
the universe and is now the
basis of cosmology. Most of
their conclusions remain
valid today but recent ad-
vances have significantly
changed many of their ideas.
The ability provided by sat-
ellites to record and send to
earth measurements and pic-
tures of sources of infra-red,
ultra-violet and x ray radia-
tion from outside the earth’s
atmosphere have consider-
ably changed the concepts of
the origin, structure and con-
cepts of the universe. Inci-
dentally, this book also be-
gan the ecological and envi-
ronmental revolution.
The Talmudists did the
same thing for social struc-
ture. Having accepted the
laws promulgated by Moses,
they realized that even their
society was too complex for
the simplistic conclusions
provided by the Five Books
of Moses. Accordingly, they
expanded them to make them
relevant to their society.
While many of these, in turn,
are not relevant to present
society, their approach of
discussion, debate and con-
clusions (often left to the
reader) seemed valid to me,
at least, until last night.
But last night I was privi-
leged to hear an informal talk
given to the Tarrant County
Association of Mediators by
County Commissioner Marti
Van Raavansway. While ac-
knowledged as the “God-
mother” of Dispute Resolu-
tion Services of Tarrant
County (the free mediation
service offered for disputes
within Tarrant County) she
made the observation that one
of the severest problems of
our society was the
population’s lack of knowl-
edge of how to handle per-
sonal disputes on a one to
one basis. The lack of this
behavioral skill often leads
to violent and inappropriate
behavior. Teaching these
skills, particularly to young
people, might prevent (rather
than control, react to, or pun-
ish) this type of behavior in
the future. On reflection, I
realized that this concept was
the satellite data of behav-
ioral science.
Even the ancient Rabbis
didn ’ t reach what now seems
to be an obvious conclusion:
Teaching dispute resolution
skills to prevent reactive be-
havior is far superior than
trying to control the results
of that behavior.
Technically, teaching
mechanisms are in place and
teachers could easily be
taught and could in tum teach
these skills to school chil-
dren. Tarrant County is al-
ready beginning to offer these
skills to its adult employees.
The expenses are minimal
and the potential results are
of major significance to our
society.
Let’s get on with it!
