On November 6 Israel issued a
10 ag. single pictured above. This
stamp was issued in tribute to the
‘Wheelchair Olympics.” The de-
sign features two wheelchair-bound
athletes reach-
ing for a bas-
ketball. The tab,
not shown has
three joined cir-
cles with the in-
s c r i p t i o n
“Friendship”
over one, “Uni-
ty” over the
middle, and
“Sportsmanship” over the third. On
three lines beneath is the legend
“International/Games for the/Par-
alyzed.”
The Games for the Paralyzed
was started in 1948 in the Spinal
Injury Center at Stoke-Mandeville,
Great Britain, by Prof. Ludwig
Guttman. Since 1952 these games
have been held annually at the
Stoke-Mandeville Hospital. Israel
has sent a contingent to the Games
regularly since 1953.
In 1956 the Games were awarded
the Fearnly Cup by the Olympic
Committee in Melbourne and it
was decided to hold the Wheel-
chair Games every four years in
the Olympic venue. Games were
held in Rome in 1960 and in Tokyo
in 1964. However, at the beginning
of 1966 Mexico declined to stage
the wheelchair games. Israel’s of-
fer to take over was enthusias-
tically accepted.
