The Professional Choice
in Lubbock, scientists believe
that the TV age of medicine
already is here. Since June
1990, they have been saving
lives by enabling distant spe-
cialists to make difficult di-
agnoses without ever seeing
the patient except on a tele-
vision screen.
This new approach to
health care is called
MEDNET, and it’s centered
at the Lubbock medical
school. Utilizing two-way
video, telemedicine links the
specialists at the medical
school with rural hospitals
and clinics and dozens of
physicians in West Texas
small towns and hamlets.
The two-way video en-
ables a physician and his pa-
tient located hundreds of
miles away to consult with
specialists at the Lubbock
school. In addition to inter-
active voice, the system
transmits X-rays, pathologi-
cal images, color pictures of
slides and specimens,
electro-cardiograms and
other data. With this infor-
mation, the consulting phy-
sician at Lubbock often can
make the diagnosis, suggest
treatment and have the pa-
tient on the road back to
health in a matter of hours.
Patients like the two-way
video examinations. They
say it’s like talking with their
doctor in their own living
room. Most aren’t disturbed
by the video cameras, high
resolution monitors and mi-
crophones. The consultations
are almost as comfortable as
a conversation with a friend
over lunch.

Dealing With Stepchildren Visitations
Many households today
must deal with issues that
involve visits from one
spouse’s children from a pre-
vious marriage. This can en-
gender feelings of jealousy
and competition between the
children who live with you
and the children who visit.
Feelings of anger and resent-
ment frequently exist, and
should be discussed openly
before they develop into
major problems.
In establishing rules for the
children, it may be helpful to
point out that, while you un-
derstand their feelings, you
expect them to be polite and
courteous to their stepsib-
lings. Encourage them to talk
about their feelings openly

with you; at the same time,
be clear that these feelings
do not excuse rude or inap-
propriate behavior.
The spouses in the second
marriage also need to be open
with each other about the
stresses that stepchildren
cause them. The stepparent
often feels displaced or ig-
nored when the spouse’s chil-
dren visit; efforts need to be
made to improve this situa-
tion.
When stepchildren remain
an ongoing source of fric-
tion, a counselor can provide
helpful suggestions for deal-
ing with the realities of inte-
grating children from a pre-
vious marriage into the new
household.

to a major hospital. In most
cases, treatment continues at
their local hospital under the
care of their personal physi-
cian. The specialist becomes
3nly a face on the TV screen.
Rural hospitals, which
have been closing by the
dozen in recent years, also
welcome telemedicine. To
them, it’s a financial boom.

Since telemedicine allows
most patients to be treated by
their own physician in their
local hospital, that institu-
tion survives and the medi-
cal costs to the patient are
less. Local treatment also
helps preserve the reimburse-
ment base provided rural
hospitals by Medicare and
other government agencies.
Although relatively new in
Texas, telemedicine systems
have been around for almost
three decades. However, the
Texas Tech MEDNET is the
largest, mostcomprehensive
system in the country. It also
is the most versatile, using
regular telephone lines as
well as satellite uplinks. It
has been so successful that
more than a half dozen other
states now are using it as a
