32 MORE RUMANIAN
JEWISH LEADERS
SENTENCED TO PRISON
TEL AVIV (WNS) News that
reached Israel this week tells
of 32 more Rumanian Zionist
and Jewish communal leaders
who were sentenced to prison
terms of one to twelve years
by Rumanian military courts.
Only one man, the report states,
was acquitted by these courts
in the fifth of a series of trials
involving an estimated 150
Jewish leaders.
A decision to start a mass
hunger strike on May 18 in
protest against the trial and
imprisonment' of Rumanian
Jewish leaders was announced
during the week here by an
organization of former Ruman-
ian Jews. In a move to attract
world attention to the fate of
several hundred Jewish leaders
in Rumania, leading figures in
pre-Hitler Rumania will under-
take an unlimited hunger
strike. Among some 40 persons
in Israel wha have indicated
that they will participate are
idov Cohen, a deputy in the
Israel Parliament; Dr. I Ko-
havi, a former chairman of the
Zionist Federation of Rumania;
Dr. M. Singer, also a former
Zionist chairman, and Dr. A.
Landau, onetime member of
the Rumanian Perfiament.
Jews throughout the world
were called upon this week by
he Jewish Agency to protes
the Rumanian Government’
attempt to crush Jews who
“have shown that they want
to remain Jews.”
