Federation Women’s Event Features George Will
By Sharon Wisch
George Will, political analyst and
syndicated columnist addressed an
enthusiastic crowd of more than
can Israel save the United /States
and the rest of the West?'
Will cautioned the audience to

George Will expressed his support for Israel with clarity.

Will stated that being an ardent
supporter of Israel, “has entirely to
do w ith being a patriotic American.
We have consistently asked the
wrong question," he said. “Not can
the United States save Israel, but
proposals offered by the Saudis.
“We have learned since 9/11
about the quality of Saudi
friendship,” he said. “Arafat’s
objection is to the settlements in
Tel Aviv, Haifa, and the rest.
Perhaps Israel could retain sov-
ereignty of Jewish neighbor-
hoods in Jerusalem and the West
Wall,” he suggested was the true
mission of the Saudi proposal.
Will also addressed the issue
of the location of the American
Embassy in Israel. Currently,
the Embassy is in Tel Aviv.
“Everyone but the State
Department knows the capital
of Israel. We should put our
Embassy exactly where we
have been told not to put it
(Jerusalem]. It’s a disgrace.”
Will received a standing ovation
from the gathering. As people
were waiting for their cars, they
were buzzing about how dynamic
and inspirational his comments
were. “It was so refreshing to hear
this from a non-Jew,” said Hannah
Lambert, Early Childhood
Director and Admissions Director
of Akiba Academy.
This year’s dinner marked the
tenth anniversary of the
Women’s Campaign
Event. Approximately
$430,000 was pledged.
The overall goal of the
Federation’s, Lives
Touched Annual Campaign
2002 is nine million dol-
lars. As of March 4,
$5,620,336 has been
raised, according to
Federation Marketing and
Communications Director
Melanie Hoffman. The
majority of the funds are
allocated toward local
agencies and services. Lisa
Rudner, Women’s Event
co-chair with Barbara Stein
and Joanie Weinstein
attributed the success of the
evening to the quality of
the speaker. She said. “The
clarity and commitment that he
had was inspiring. He was mag
nificent. He spoke words we
needed to hear." With Will on the
slate, the evening drew 200 more
donors than last year. “People
want substance,” Rudner said.
The evening included the
presentation of a special award
to honoree Sarah Feldman.
Ynette Hogue, a Past Federation
Campaign Chairperson, stated
that Mrs. Feldman was a woman
behind the scenes choosing to
support family members, like
her late husband Jacob, who
were leaders of the Dallas
Jewish community. She is
"...elegant, dignified, understat-
ed, but so caring and a woman
of inspiration... An aish -ha el,
a woman of valor,” Hogue said.
Following the presentation to
Mrs Feldman, this years 2002
Campaign video, which featured
a message from Israel’s Minister
two-fold. He discussed the on-
going terror attacks faced daily by
Israelis. “It’s either them or us,”
he stated. He also addressed the
crisis faced by Jews in Argentina.
He welcomed Argentine Jewish
immigration. “There is nothing
more important that saving the
future of Jewish life....Whoever
wants to leave Argentina, let him
make Israel his first choice.”
Rabbi William Gershon, of
Congregation Shearith Israel,
who returned recently from
Israel addressed the group as
well. Gershon said, “Every dol-
lar you give makes a difference.
Give ‘till it feels good. It is a
joy, it is a privilege, it is a
sacred responsibility.”
