Election
continued from p. 17
parliamentary elections, and
the rise of an ultra-national-
ist leader who tends to evoke
words like ‘‘demented” and
“fascist:*
Some observers are pre-
dicting a new surge of emi-
gration by Jews who have
been sitting on exit permits
for months. But recent expe-
rience suggests that the vast
majority will do what they’ve
been doing for the past three
years - sit tight and blindly
hope for the besL
This is the dilemma facing
Jewish leaders today; how
do you actively promote
emigration among a stubborn
population without sowing
panic? How do you help
boost Jewish identity among
Russia’s largely secular
Jews, without creating insti-
tutions that will only make
them even more reluctant to
make the agonizing break
from their homeland?
How do you make the point
that it’s downright crazy for
Jews to remain in a country
that has betrayed them at
every turn, and which now
seems on the brink of yet
another infatuation with a
dangerous ideology?
And how do you sustain
sympathy in this country for
a group of people who con-
sistently seem to make bad
decisions?
Some Jewish leaders con-
tinue to point out that pro-
moting Jewish identity
among a big Jewish popula-
tion that is not secure or
knowledgeable in its
Jewishness could result in an
enhanced desire to make
aliyah in the long term.
