Protests have been streaming in to Washington concerning the
deletion of a Jewish religious scene from a United States Infor-

“The suppression of Jewish religious scenes from a U.S. gov-

strates that ou-r government is well aware that it is not only the

of Jewish life.

STRANGE DEVELOPMENT AT YEAR’S END

alleged action of the United States Information Agency in barring

“We call upon the United States Information Agency to re-

we believe, is to reflect the rich diversity of American life and
the contributions to American civilization that have been made
by men of every race, religion and national origin.”
Dr. Prinz said the American Jewish Congress had received the
following statement on the film Dec. 18 from Donald M. Wilson,
deputy director of the United States Information Agency in Wash-
ington:
“There was no censorship exerted by U.S.I.A. nor is it true
that ore of three religious scenes was dropped.
“The first tentative approach discussed with the writer and
producer was for a panoramic opener which would show this na-
tion’s geography, institutions and people, including possible scenes
of church services. These church scenes as well as the entire' production of “Hadassah <Bot-

Until mow, the State Department has insisted that it is power-
less to do anything about the boycott on the ground that the mat-
ter is excusively an internal concern of the Arab goverments in-
volved.
“Other countries have not feared to tell Arab ambassadors:
that their efforts to export anti-Semitism are unwelcome and in-
tolerable. The Government of the United States must do no less.”
Dr. Prinz called on Secretary Rusk “to summon the ambassa^
dors of Arab lands accredited to the United States and to put
them on notice that our government will no longer be silent in;
the face of continued Arab efforts to infect American society
with the virus of their own religious bigotry.”
Every American who believes in equality will, we believe,
endorse that call.
Above all, in the event of the recent demonstration of tf»e
basic cohesiveness of American democracy, this is indeed a strange
development at year’s end.
