the Middle East in connection with a suggestion of possible in-
clusion of footage of a Rabbi.’'
“Bin the matter quickly became academic when Rod Serling,
himself, changed the concept of the program!—entirely for artis-
tic reasons. The remark was in no sense based on agency policy
—nor was it meant as a prohibition on such conclusion.”
Mr. Wilson, savs the J.W.V. report, enumerated a list of
U.S.I.A. materials exhibited in the Arab states which depicted
Rabbis, Jewish religious services, and well-known American per-
sonalities of the Jewish faith. Among theme were personages as
Philip Klutznick, former National President of B’nai B’rithi; and
Supreme Court Justice Ariliur Goldberg.
Mr. Wilson also stated that, for instance, material sent to
Arabs on Music in America, photographs and biograhical material
were included on Leonard Bernstein, Benny Goodman, Irving Ber-
lin, and other Jewish artists. He said that this policy should prorve
that the U.S.I.A. “reports to the Middle East on the merits of the
given story, with absolutely no restriction arising out of the reli-
gious or ethnic affliation or author or subject and that “no report
on this counry’s arts and letters or science or politics would be
complete if reference to the many Jewish leaders in those fields
was omitted. A& a matter of fact, the very diversity of our so-
ciety is One of the proudest messages we stress to the world.”
Mr. Wilson stressed that “it is not true that we deleted a
scene of a Rabbi from the program. This agency has no policy
which would require such deletion, nor will it ever adopt one.
Our policy requires fair treatment of Jewish life in our material,
wherever it is to be sent. More to the point, we follow a policy
os treating fairly all ethnic and religious segments of our society.”
