I INTRODUCE A DOCTOR
I was in a building of our town which contains quite a few
doctors’ offices. I had accompanied my wife there for a check-up
for her. We sat in the big waiting room, while I was compliment-
ing myself for not needing any of the doctors. Nothing at all the
matter with my aging body.
But, after all, I found some high healing there for my poor
soul. These doctors seem to have the idea that there’s more than
the bodies of people to be looked after. And really, it isn’t just
our human bodies which are sickly.
On the clerk’s counter of the doctors big waiting room there
rests a pile of little books for the patients, by which to treat
their souls while they waited for their doctors to call ’em in, to
have their bodies looked over.
I picked up one of these booklets . . . really a small paper-
cover pamphlet. The cover reads: “Timeless Truths . . . Proverbs
of Solomon.” Yes, those Proverbs out of our Old Testament; on
the cover-page stood the image of King Solomon himself with his
crown, on.
So I sat down in the doctors’ thee not if they say, Come Avith
waiting room to treat my poor us . . . let us lurk privily for
soul spiritually by aid of grand the innocent . . . My son, walk
Dr. Solomon. (Yes, I’d rather not thou in the way with them.”
notice him as good, old Dr. (The sinners, that is.) “Refrain
Solomon than King Solomon.) thy feet from their path.”
Oh, I hadn’t been reading his
teachings in Scripture for some- Though, .really, dear Dr. Solo-
, time past. So while my wife’s mon> I myself have grown old
body was being looked into by though to be wise to keep away
our doctor, I myself was giving from sinners; much more hap-
my haggard soul to teratment by J associate rather with my

small book: “The Proverbs of happy kids.
Solomon the son of David, king ^
of Israel.” So, y°u see> how mY soul kept
on improving in this big office
I’m handing all this on to all of the doctors, even while oth-
other souls that may feel sickly ers were being served on their
and, maybe, can be served well poor bodies by the M. D.’s. Dr.
by this Dr. Solomon. Solomon by his Proverbs may do
T , . „ . . , „ oven more successfully than
In his Proverbs he was tell- physicians do for the bodies of
mg my own sickly soul: “To re- the human race, I guessed. My
ceive the instruction of wisdom, poor soul had come to fe^
justice, judgment and equity, a
wise man will hear and will in-
crease his learning; and a man
of understanding shall attain
. wise counsels . . . The fear of
the Lord is the beginning of
knowledge; but fools despise
wisdom and instruction.”
Dr. Solomon went on to tell
me: “My son. despise not the
chastening of the Lord; neither
be weary of His correction,
even as a father the son in
whom he delighteth. Happy is
the man that findeth wisdom;
and the man that getteth un-
derstanding. For the merchan-
dise of it is better than the mer*
chandise of silver, and the gain
thereof than fine gold.”
Just then one of the patients
had come hobbling out of one of
the doctors’ offices looking
sickly; but this Segal seemed to
feel better as he applied him-
self to treatment by the great
good, Dr. Solomon who is more
widely known as King Solomon.
Dr. Solomon went on to speak
to me: “Enter not into the
path of the wicked, and go not
in the way of evil men . . . For
they eat the bread of wicked-
ness, and drink the wine of
violence.”
He went on to report on a
lovely lady for me to go along
with. “Forsake her not, and she
shall preserve thee; love her
and she shall keep thee.”
And who is this beautiful girl
I’m asked to love: “The wise
Dr. Solomon told me: She‘s wis-
dom and understanding . . .
“exalt her,” he went on, “and
she shall promote thee; she shall
bring thee to honor when thou
dost embrace her. She shall give
to thine head an ornament of
grace; a crown of glory shall she
deliver thee.”
Well, at last my wife came
out of our doctor’s office, after
the check-up and I closed this
little book of “Timeless Truths
. . . Proverbs of Solomon.”, I
stuck the book into my coat
pocket to hand it on to the read-
ers of this column.
I hope they’re all feeling
thankful, anyway.
