Locally printed, the promo-
tional piece will include some
local history and facts about the,
area for distribution through the
chamber and Texas Tburist Infor-
mation Centers. .
Officials want only black and
white photos, saying instant
prints

“Poloroid”
unacceptable.
Those who enter must agree to
assign all photo reproduction
rights to the chamber.
Entries can be mailed or
delivered to the chamber office at
1009 Main St. from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Peter is an eight year-old who
will be having a kidney transplant
in approximately six weeks and
medical costs are going up. The
garage/bake sale will be held on

ticipated $1,000 in proceeds from
the garage/bake sale will go
directly to Peter Bullara.
“The costs of five doctor visits
a week with a $150 deductible,
medicines and miscellaneous
items mean the expenses are
becoming unbearable,” said Aya
Matocha, Sam Gideon employee
representative. “We have ten
employees working at the garage
salebut we really need the peo-
ple of Bastrop to help us reach out
j[oal. He is a precious little eight
year-old boy who really needs our
help.”

Firemen set
Extravaganza
The fourth annual Fireman’s
Extravaganza in Elgin is schedul-
ed for April 4 at Memorial Park
on North Main Street.
The event revolves around the
annual barbecue cook-off, but
other foods, cold drinks, arts and
crafts are also part of the fun, ac-
cording to extravaganza
organizers.
Cooks are required to pay a $50
entry fee for one or all four meat
categories. For information con-
tact Gordon Swenson at 285-4044.
Sue Brasher is the contact per-
son for arts and crafts exhibitors.
Kathy Brown has information for
the food vendors.
Admission to the park
festivities is free. Lawn chairs
and casual dress are suggested.
Farmers market
meeting slated
The annual meeting of the
River Valley Farmers Market
Association, who sponsor of the
Bastrop-Elgin-Smithville
farmers markets, will be held
April 5 at the .Cat-Fish Corner
Restaurant inRockne, located at
the corner of FM 20 and FM 535.
Sign up of new members and
market information will start at
6:30 p.m.
The regular meeting of
members will start at 7:30 p.m.
with dinner. Marilyn Magaro,
marketing specialist with the
Texas Department of Agriculture,
will be guest speaker.
Also this year the farmers
market has a program for small
backyard gardners who may
want to sell their produce for
some extra income.

Deacon Crosby Barefield
Deacon Crosby Barefield died
Monday, March 16,1992.
He was born to Deacon Curtis
Barefield and Mrs. Irena Thomas
Barefield in Smithville.
He grew up in Smithville and
graduated from the Smithville
Colored High School. He profess-
ed his religious belief at an early
age and was baptisized in 1922.
On February 13, 1942 he was
united in holy matrimony to Ruth
Johnson.
He was inducted into the United
States Army on February 6,1942.
He served his country honorably
and was discharged on October
12,1945.
He served as a senior deacon
and chairman of the Deacon
Board of Mount Pilgrim Baptist
Church. He also served as
treasurer for his church.
He was a faithful Masonic
Lodge brother and long time
member of Joseph D. Sayers
Lodge No. 235. He was president
of the Smithville Community
Center and sat on the Headstart
Policy Council.
He was preceded in death by
his wife, Ruth Johnson Barefield.
Survivors include his son and
daughter-in-law, Alex and
Carolyn Powell; daughter and
son-in-law, Etta and James
Massey, all of Austin; sister-in-
law, Naomi Johnson Thompson of
Smithville; a devoted friend,
Myrna Jones of Bastrop; aunt,
Mrs. Phebie Bean of Houston;
nine grandchildren; 14 great-
grandchildren; many cousins,
nieces, nephews, and a host of
other relatives and friends.
Services were held on Sunday,
March 22 at 1:30 p.m. at Mount
Pilgrim Baptist Church in
Smithville. Interment was held at
Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
Graveside Ceremony was held at
Joseph D. Sayers Lodge No. 235.
Pallbearers were Emmerson
McGregor, Curtis Moore,
Reginald Carter, Homer Moore,
C. Dennis Oliver, James Massey
Jr.
Honorary pallbearers were
Masonic Brothers of Joseph D.
Sayers Lodge No. 235.

Thurman Amos Gilley, 78
Thurman Amos Gilley of
Floresville, formerly of Bastrop
County, died Wednesday, March
18,1992. He was 78.
He was born in Wilson County,
Texas to Amos Forrest Gilley and
Gertrude Dobie Gilley.
He attended Saspamco and
Floresville schools.
He was married to Elizabeth
Peschke on May 25, 1935 in
Floresville.
Clay Richardson, 51
He was in the United States Ar-
my and served in World War II,
the Philippines on Bantangas
Islands for the 34th-69th Median
Ordinance attached to Transport
Command.
He was a supervisor for State
School and retired in 1985.
He is survived by his wife,
Elizabeth Gilley of Floresville;
two sons, Vaughn Gilley and wife
Madelyn of San Antonio; Steven
Edgar Gilley of Austin; two
daughters, Jessie Ruth Rackley
of Sandia and Earlene
Blackstock of Austin; brothers,
Forrest Gilley of Nursery, Earl
Gilley of Floresville and Claude
Edgar Gilley of San Antonio;
seven grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren.
Services were held on Saturday,
March 21 at 10 a.m. in the Vinyard
Funeral Home in Floresville with
Brother Olen Wilson officiating.
Interment was held in Marcelina
Cemetery in Wilson County.
Pallbearers were Carl Rackley
III, Kevin Rackley, Richard
Wayne Willemberg, Steven Bryan
Gilley, Kenneth Gilley and Robert
Gilbert.
Honorary pallbearers were
Glen Gilley and Lee Gibson.
Clay Richardson, 51, of Cedar
Creek died Wednesday, March 25,
1992.
He was born January 8,1941 in
Redffield, Arkansas to Raleign
Lee and Thelma Duncan
Richardson. He was employed for
25 years by Universal Electric
Construction Company and for
the past six and a half years own-
ed and operated Clay Richardson
Construction, Incorporated.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m.
Friday, March 27, at Newby
Funeral Home in Bastrop. Burial
followed in Fairview Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife,
Shirley Richardson of Cedar
Creek; two sons, David Richard-
son of Bastrop and Wayne
Richardson of Cedar Creek; a
daughter, Christina Richardson
of Cedar Creek; his mother,
Thelma Mayfield of Cabot,
Arkansas; three brothers, Lee
Richardson of Cabot, Arkansas,
William Mayfield of Jacksonville,
Arkansas apd Elmer Mayfield of
Cabot, Arkansas; four sisters,
Pauline Moody of Jacksonville,
Arkansas, Loretta Denning of
Austin, Arkansas, Patricia Law of
Lexington, Nebraska and
Beatrice Sherral of Hot Springs,
Arkansas; and three grand-
daughters, Jennifer Richardson,
Jessica Richardson and Robin
Richardson.

Austin men wanted
for theft in Bastrop
A pair of Austin men accused of
two crimes in Paige have manag-
ed to dodge doing time in the
Bastrop County Jail, so far.
While sheriff’s investigator
Chris Walker was on the trail of
Charles Christopher Lancaster,
21, and Charles Edward Clark II,
20, the two were arrested in
Travis County on other charges
and are still in custody, he said
Friday.
The two, along With a third
suspect, are accused of takipg a
20- foot trailer from the Thomas
Young residence on January 10.
The trio allegedly returned to
the residence sometime before
January 31 and stole tools, home
entertainment equipment and
groceries valued at $5,000.
According to Walker, informa-
tion led him and deputy Robert
Flores to a car in Manor where
one of the suspect’s girlfriend liv-
ed. Inside the vehicle, they found
property that appeared to belong
to Mr. Young and pawn tickets in
the apartment.
Property recovered at the pawn
shop and at the suspect (Austin
apartment totaled about $3,300,
the investigator said.
“We are in the process of track-
ing down the remaining property
and hope to recover more,” he
added.
