JHS Band places 9th at area contest
Jacksboro High School Tiger Band competes Saturday just as the sun comes up over the bleachers in Denton at the
CH Collins Stadium. At the regional contest Oct. 22, the Jacksboro band drew the ticket to be first band out at 8 a.m.
for area contest. Nineteen bands competed at area contest, where there are usually 20 or more bands competing. This
time, rather than ten bands chosen to advance to the finals, seven were picked. At area competition, there are five
judges with three judging only the music and two judge only the marching. Each judge ranks each band and they to-
tal the numbers to decide those advancing to finals. One judge ranked the Tiger Band as #6. When the numbers were
tallied, the Tiger Band placed ninth, and were not picked to advance to finals in the evening, even though they were
very close. They received many good comments from the judges, including very high reviews for the Colorguard and
drum line. This is the best the Jacksboro band has placed in area contest in years. Director Alan Barnett says, “ I am
so proud of these students. They worked extremely hard this year, as they always do. We pushed them this year with
a very difficult, competitive marching show and these kids pulled it off better than I could have imagined. I want
to thank everyone who supported us this year including all the band parents, school administration and sponsors. I
also want to thank my staff, Assistant Director Kaleb Schumann, Percussion Instructor Bob Hensley and Colorguard
Instructor Allishia Barnett. Without them, none of this would have been possible. I am very excited about the up-
coming years for the Purple Pride Band. Our numbers are growing very fast and I believe we are quickly becoming
one of the premier bands in Texas. Now we start working on the concert/sightreading competition and try to end this
year out with a sweepstakes!” In the bottom photos, drum majors, Nikki Johnson and Johnny Barry present plaques
for advancing to area. (Photos courtesy of Stacy Hood)
