Museum ghosts
Another successful event, “A
Night at the Museum with the
Ghosts of Jack County,” has
come and gone!
The weather was perfect
for the arrival of the “visitors
from the past” and while it
was a little chilly for the folks
attending, they were warmed
by the delicious stew, corn-
bread and hot cider and were
ready for the telling of the
tales from Jack County his-
tory.
Tales from the early 1800’s
“told by” those first settlers
in the county, tales about the
“red, hot town” of Jacksboro
in the early Fort Richardson
days and tales about the Indi-
an attacks on the settlers kept
the audience spellbound.
This second annual event,
sponsored by the Friends of
the Museum, could not have
been accomplished without
the dedicated help from the
Friends members and mem-
bers of the Board of Directors
as well as help from some of
our local citizens.
Thanks to the ladies from the
board and from the Friends
group who made stew, corn-
bread and delicious desserts
and who helped to decorate
the museum grounds.
It was very festive and in-
viting!
Many thanks to our pre-
senters - Mitchell Davenport,
Colonel Mackenzie; Ed Bon-
ner, John Hensley; Ken Ray,
Britt Johnson; Gary Rozzell,
Harve Rozell; Perk Perkins,
Doc Holliday; Melinda Per-
kins, Mary Stewart Carpen-
ter Shown; Keri Lane, Lottie
Deno; Karla King Chapman,
Rubye Amber Leach Brown;
Charles Sweeten, Asahel
P.Chapman; and Marianne
Myers, Mary Josephine My-
Your stories were entertain-
ing and historically signifi-
cant!
We found out that even in
the 1800s the city streets
were a concern to the locals!
Thank you to the lead-
ers of the Church of Christ
who loaned us the tables and
chairs and to the volunteer
firemen who so graciously
moved them for us.
Thanks to Bill and Laronda
Hawkins for the use of their
“stew pot” and to Floyd Eas-
ter for setting it up for us.
Thanks to Dairy Queen for
donating cups and to Market
Street for the donation of the
cider.
We appreciate your help
more than you can know.
The next event coming up
for the museum is the “Holi-
day Historical Dinner Tour”
scheduled for Dec. 3.
More details will be coming
soon. You won’t want to miss
this delightful event.

Veteran’s Day
With Veterans’ Day coming
up, I thought I would share
this information with those
who might be interested.
I was talking with one of
the participants in Austin a
few weeks ago who was tell-
ing me about the wonderful
and heart-wrenching stories
coming from the veterans
who were at the dinner last
year....
There is an annual dinner
taking place on Veterans’
Day in Dallas that began last
year, hosted by the Daughters
ofWWII.
It is to honor those brave
men and women, many of
whom have never heard a
“Thank You” for their service
in that war.
I think it is sold out this
year already, but anyone
who would like to participate
next year should contact the
Daughters of WWII to get
on their mailing list (www.
daughtersofww2.org.) or to
join the organization. There
is no charge to the veteran or
their spouse/caregiver.
Our family has many veter-
ans throughout its history, in
every major war as far back
as the Revolutionary War.
I am so proud of each one
of them. I would like to ex-
tend my gratitude to all of
the men and women and their
families, who have sacrificed
so much to preserve our free-
dom and the freedom of oth-
If you have never heard a
“thank you”, please accept
mine now.
I do not take my freedom for
granted and I agree whole-
heartedly with the following
poem, written by Charles M.
Province:
The Soldier
It is the soldier, not the re-
porter, who has given us free-
dom of the press.
It is the soldier, not the poet,
who has given us freedom of
speech.
If you can read this message
thank a teacher,
If you are reading it in Eng-
lish of your own free will
THANK A SOLDIER!
It is the soldier, not the cam-
pus organizer, who has given
us the freedom to demon-
strate.
It is the soldier, not the law-
It is the soldier, who salutes
the flag, who serves under
the flag, and whose coffin is
draped by the flag, who al-
lows the protester to burn the
flag■
To all the brave men and
women who have dedicated
or given their lives to protect-
ing this country and it’s free-
doms .. .Thank You!

Animal Shelter Apprecia-
tion Week
Nov. 6-12 marks Animal
Shelter Appreciation Week,
an event sponsored by the
Friends of the Jacksboro Ani-
mal Shelter to recognize and
celebrate the lifesaving ser-
vices provided by the Jacks-
boro Animal Shelter.
Animal shelters serve their
communities in many ways:
controlling stray dogs run-
ning at large, responding to
calls for assistance from the
public, helping families find
a new animal companion,
rescuing injured animals, and
returning lost animals to their
owners.
Perhaps most importantly,
animal shelters provide a
tangible example of humane
ethics and compassion for all
living creatures.
Please join the Friends of
the Jacksboro Animal Shel-
ter from 10 a.m. to noon Sat-
urday, Nov. 12, for an open
house in recognition of Na-
tional Animal Shelter Appre-
ciation Week.
Friends of the Jacksboro
Animal Shelter invites local
residents to visit the shelter,
talk with the staff and volun-
teers, and meet some of the
animals available for adop-
tion.
Come find out about the
services provided by the
Jacksboro Animal Shelter
and learn how you can help
out the area’s neediest ani-
mals.
Jacksboro Animal Shelter
is located at 1070 Hwy. 380
West.
