VALLEY MILLS PROGRESS
JULY 11,2013
Martha Boutwell talks to kids about patriotism
By DONNA VETETO
On Wednesday, Martha Boutwell
of Valley Mills came to the Library
to talk to the children participating in
the Summer Reading Program about
patriotic topics for July 4.
She told how the Colonists came
over from Great Britain and had new
lives in a place they knew nothing
about.
"It was just like going out into the
woods," Martha said. "They wanted
to be free of Great Britain so they
started a petition to separate. They
appointed five men to draft up that
petition."
"Those men were Benjamin
Franklin, John Adams, Thomas
Jefferson, Roger Sherman and Robert
Livingston," she said. "That petition
was adopted as the Declaration of
Independence."
"John Hancock signed it really
big," Martha said. "Benjamin
Franklin was the oldest at 70 to sign
it and Edward Rutledge was the
youngest at 26. Two future presidents
also signed it and they were John
Adams and Thomas Jefferson."
She then talked about Paul Revere's
ride and read a Fancy Nancy story to
the group.
After the reading, Martha took the
group outside and gave them flags
and neclaces and conducted a parade
through Santa Fe Park.
