THE CUSTOM OF GIVING
PRESENTS ON CHRISTMAS IS
NOT COMMON TO ALL
CHRISTIAN COUNTRIES!
In Latin countries their place
is taken by the “strenae,”
i.j French “etrennes,” given on
New Year’s Day—1.
It’s not strange that everybody’s
talking about GREGG’S, where
you see the difference in mer-

fitted to conditions on a given
job, but if in future years traf-
fic conditions necessitate a
change of power requirements,
the locomotives can quickly be
tailored to meet new conditions
by simply changing gears and
pinions. Units can be geared
to cover requirements from
hump switching to 90-mile-an-
liour passenger service. How-
ever. ones being put in service
by T&P will not be equipped
with the higher speed gears
Among the outstanding de-
velopments in these new swit-
chers is a new and simplified
electrical control system that
provides instant response to
the throttle for ease and speed
in switching. Starting tractive
effort is under the control of
the operator. Thansition is au-
tomatic and acceleration much
smoother than formerly,

SENDS BELLS TO FRANCE—-Clair M. Roddewlg, left, President
of the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad, presents bells to the
Right Reverend William Cousins, auxiliary bishop of Chicago, to
replace bells of Littry-les-Mines in France. The Littry bells were
damaged beyond repair in tolling the joyous news of the American
invasion. The C&EI bells were used on steam locomotives.

Diesel Switchers
The Texas & Pacific Railway
will be the first railroad in the
southwest, among the first in
the nation to put in service
an entirely new road switch-
ing locomotive which has just
been placed in production by
General Motors. Seven of these
1,500 horsepower road switch-
ers have been promised for
delivery to T&P in February,
according to L. C. Porter, vice-
president—operation, Dallas.
Square functional lines of
the new locomotives, which will
be used for heavy transfer and
lead work in the Fort Worth
terminal and possibly on ;ome
local runs elsewhere, embody
developments in power and
economy far removed from the
early diesel locomotives of the
late 30’s and early 40’s.
Greatest advantage of the
new $150,000 dollar prime mov-
ers is their flexibility of pow-
er and versatility. These GP-
7’s (general purpose), as they
are designated, offer a choice
of six different rear ratios to
meet an unusually wide range
of service. Not only can the
locomotive be more exactly
