It is proposed to increase the
capital stock of the American
Telephone and Telegraph com-
pany from $300,000,000 to $500,-
000,000. This company besides
reaching all of the larger cities
reaches 22,000 of the smaller
towns and villages.
American capitalists have
purchased 60,000 acres of land in
the Philippines and will establish
sugar plantations, furnishing em-
ployment to the natives. Millions
of acres are still available there
and in other islands geographi-
cally known as Oceania.
Taking 13,000,000 bales as the
present average yearly yield of
cotton, Dr. S. A. Knapp, the
government cotton expert, cites
the fact that the output has
doubled every twenty-two years.
Twenty-two years ago the crop
was about 6,000,000 bales;
twenty-two years before that
about 3,000.000 bales; twenty-
two years before that about 1,-
500,000 bales. If the yield in-
creases in the same ratio tie
South will be producing 2(5,000,-
000 bales in 1932.

Mr. Taft says ho travels
much because he likes it ; that he
speaks often because those who
hear him like to do so, or at
most affect to like it, and (hat
by appealing directly to the peo-|
pie he can otfset the influence of I
journals which he knows nr* |
wrong, when (and because) J
they differ from him. His rta j*
sons and conclusions may he er-
roneous, but under the guise of
a smiling and amiable man he j |
undoubtedly has his way, when I
not at home.
Now comes Mr. Armour say-j
ing that he cannot be held ac- j
countable for high prices, that ■
the farmers are growing more
exorbitant and that if they will
be less exacting in their de-
mands the packers will reduce
their rates to correspond, run;!
the consumer will benefit ac-!
cordingly. Of course, the farm j
ers will enter a declaimer, spe-
cific or general, declinir g to as !
auine responsibility, a: <1 more o,
less vigorously resenting the:
soft impeachment. Incidentally, j
they might select as a defender j
the enterprising agriculturist 1
who recently took one of hi*,
prize porkers to market in an
automobile. How much he asked
for it was not stated. j
