Space Ace Planning To Play
Farther And Farther Off Base
Within the next five years,
JR American astronauts will cap-
ture the world’s imagination
with a rapid series of aero-
nautic marvels.
|§! So predicted Ca| t. Joe B.
Jordan i f Sween\. I he '51-
year-old Texas pilot who set
p a world’s altitude record
Dec. Id attaining aheight

V F-104C.
Jordan is in Houston on his
way to Germany for an Air
Force assignment at Hitburg
A.F.B.
Jordan lists these achieve-
ments to look for in the next
few years:
A man will be put into orbit
in a space vehicle that can be
guided, controlled and brought
back to earth by the pilot.
23m ikies will be filled with
man-made satIlites, packed with
t-quipiiiciit lui trvi-iy imaginable
type of space test.
Airplanes will be made of
‘•exotic’ new metals capable
of withstanding fantastic tem-
peratures created by their high
speeds.
A man may reach another
planet in the universe.
Jordan said the X-15 flight
on Aug. 12, in which Maj. Ro-
bert M. White soared to an un-
official altitude of 131,000 feet,
was a logical prelude to mann-
j ed space flight.
“Anri the X-15 hasn’t show'n
j anything yet,” said Jordan, “be-
jiauNi it’s still operating with a
; small engine. A much more
powerful one iias» been buiu fur
Ft."
Jordan said he feels the pro-
posed B-70 bomber will be pro-
duced soon and adapted to com-
mercial aircraft. It will have ;
speeds up to 2000 ni.p.h. anu
probably will have a heatproof
skin yet to be developed.
Jordan said he would like to
take part in a space program.
“The trouble is,” he said,
‘‘there are plenty of volunteers.
I would like to be givenl the op-
portunity to volunteer before
I’m too old.”
Jordan, 31, attended the Uni-
versity of Houston before en-
tering the Air Force in 1948.
He is married and has a daugh-
ter, Charlene, 15 months old,
This fall. Jordan and Capt.
Jue Kiuenger, who recenriy
made a high-altitude parachute
from a iialloon, will rece've
Harmon international trophies
from President Eisenhower.
