Blind Student
Hosts Show
For KNTU
The problems a blind student may face
crossing the campus on his way to class
were featured on a new program aired by
KNTU-FM (88.5) called “Wilderness
Wandering,” Wednesday. It will be broad-
cast again at 11 p.m. Sunday.
Hosting the program was Duncan
Holmes, a blind Denton graduate student,
who gave his personal account of the diffi-
culties a blind student might experience on
his way to class.
“There is little problem in getting around
campus,” says Holmes, “but the hardest
thing to get used to are those bicycles every-
one seems to leave on the walks.”
“There you are walking along and wham!
you run into those bicycles sticking out in
the way,” Holmes said. “Those things can
take a chunk right out of your leg; they are
a real problem to both blind students and
sighted students alike.”
The program takes a look at the “light
side" of the handicapped student by a blind
student, said Sam Rosenwasser, promotion
director at the station.
“We don’t feel the students will be of-
fended by the humor presented in the pro-
gram,” Rosenwasser said. “The only stu-
dents that could be offended would be a
blind student, but we feel he won’t if he
knows that the student hosting the program
is also blind.”
The program is completely spontaneous,
said Rosenwasser “It is amazing how he
can do a five-minute program with no
script,” he added.
The station hopes to get the program syn-
dicated in the near future, Rosenwasser
said.

Denton Councilman To Clarify
Status of Campus Republicans
Attempting to clear up the present status
of the College Republicans with the State
Republican Executive Committee, Tom
Jester, Denton city councilman, will speak
to the organization tonight in Room 154
f‘C the Business Administration Building,
according to Bill McKissick, president of
the College Republicans.
According to McKissick, Irving senior,
there was a recent split in the Young Re-
publicans resulting in the creation of the
College Republican Club and the Texas
Young Republican Federation (TYRE).
The TYRE desired a coalition of the two
factions, but the College Republicans re-
fused.
McKissick said a recent study of the
situation was made by a commission spon-
sored by the state executive committee and
the results included a disavowal of both
parties and a resolution to work with other
local clubs.
McKissick said Jester will also speak on
recent actions taken by the Denton Citv
Council and the upcoming city elections.

The economics department has announc-
ed a new field of study will be offered this
fall to prepare graduate students to work as
economic research interns in small banks
and industries.
“The program began in the fall of 1972
but will officially get under way this year,
and is open to all students interested in the
program,” Dr Kendall Cochran of the eco-
nomics faculty, said
There will be no requirement concerning
undergraduate major, he added.
In the past economic researchers held
a doctor’s degree, but the department is
offering the study on the master’s level.
“This will bring in a new element to small
banks which were not able to afford re-
searchers who had earned a doctorate,”
Dr. Cochran said
The program will allow students to get
valuable experience by actually working
under business conditions, he added.
“The purpose is to give students the
research skills they need to give competent
advice to the banks that employ them,”
Dr. Cochran said
The program will also prepare the stu-
dent to work for insurance and petroleum
companies, according to Dr. Cochran
Banks in the greater Dallas-Fort Worth
area have given their support to the pro-
gram by providing the employment.
“We have the promised cooperation of
local banks and large city banks ,” he said.

A big percentage of North Texas students
commute from either Dallas or Fort Worth
They know it is no fun to fight rush-hour
traffic for an hour or two to gel to or from
class.
But Dr. Cora Hicks of the English faculty
drives 448 miles each week to her job here
on campus. She commutes weekly from
Austin.
“It is quite a long trip,” Dr. Hicks

says. “When I get to Hillsboro, 1 brighten
up a bit because 1 know it’s not as far ahead
as it is behind. But deliver me from those
days it snows or sleets. Those are the bad
ones."
Dr. Hicks' schedule is arranged so that
she teaches a full ioau of 12 hours in three-
and-a-ha!f days. Her first class is on Mon-
day at 6:30 p.m and her last class is at 11
a.m. on Thursday. This gives her more time
at home in Austin.
“Both sons are in school and not in Aus-
tin," she said "My husband travels a great
deal, and we are usually gone the same days
oftheweek. I suppose my German Shepherd
misses me the most, because I’m not there
to fix him a hot meal.”
Dr. Hicks is nearing the end of her
second year at North Texas. She teaches
one or two courses in Shakespeare (depend-
ing on the semester), a graduate course in
Milton and one or two sophomore courses
in British literature.
She decided to come to North Texas
about three years ago while she was attend-
ing the South Central Modern Language
Association meeting in Memphis, Tenn.
“The people from North Texas saw me
and told me that they were looking for peo-
ple in the Renaissance, and asked me if 1
would be interested,” she said. “We then
began negotiating and I decided to come.
“My sons call me the ‘Denton Kid’," she
said. “One calls me the ‘Denton Speed
Queen’.”
