Strength
for living
By JERRY BURNAMAN
A pressure cooker is used for home canning. It can also be
used for cooking a piece of tough meat to juicy tenderness.
One day my mother was cooking a roast in her pressure
cooker.
Ka-boom! Splat!
The cooker blew up, plastering the roast on the kitchen ceil-
ing. The safety valve, designed to let off excess steam,
somehow got clogged; something had to give.
At times it seems as though pressure builds up inside us
with an explosive force. If something doesn’t give, we feel
that we will fly apart.
There are several logical reasons for pressure: a complex
society, too much to do, or too many demand! But pressure
does not originate from the outside; it comes from inside the
person. It’s our response to external circumstance. Thus,
don’t blame your pressures on anyone else.
How can we deal with pressure? First consider that a little:
pressure is helpful. Tension keeps us going and prods us
toward performing each task with excellence. The problem is
excessive pressure. Certain safety measures must be taken
before the exploding point is reached.
Don't make hasty decisions during times of extreme
pressure. When under a heavy load, some people have the
urge to buy things. They rush out and buy a new car, thinking
this will give a feeling of accomplishment and release some
of the pressure. If the car is financed, the increased
payments will likely be a source of increased pressure.
Don’t let failures get you down. At some juncture in life we
all fail. We should learn from our failures and not make the
same mistakes again. For example, Thomas Edison failed
hundreds of times before he finally came up with the right
combination of materials to make the light bulb. Persistence
pays great dividends.
A change of routine, a rest, or diversion is a good safety
valve. Someone said, “If you don’t come apart and rest, you
will come apart.”
During his earthly ministry, Jesus Christ had many
responsibilities. Days and nights were consumed with labors
to help the needy. He chose twelve men to help in the work,
yet the demands were beyond their capacity to produce.
After a strenuous period when more than 5,000 were fed
both physically and spiritually, he said, “Come ye yourselves
into a desert place, and rest a while” (Mark 6:30). This rest
was a safety valve to help them refresh body and spirit. ‘
Keep your safety valve unclogged! The release of ex-
cessive pressure gives strength for living.

(/ message for today's life-styles...
And one of the company said unto him, Matter, tpeah to
my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.
And he laid unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a
divider over you?
And he laid unto them, Take heed, and beware of
covetoutneu: for a man's life comiiteth not In the abun-
dance of thingi which he poiteueth.
St. Luke 12: 13-15
Covetousness — the word has an unpleasant
ring — and we tend to limit its meaning because
we were told in childhood that it is wrong to
covet that which belongs to another.
The dictionary defined covetousness thud:
Excessively desirous; avaricious; greedy.
Nothing pleasant about these words. They
refer to qualities we just don’t find in “nice”
people, in people who are kind and considerate.
Few of us would consider ourselves to be of a
covetousness nature — even though we may
want more of the good things of life than we
; really need.
; We should remember that the measure of Our
I life will not be made according to our posses-
sions
