Sponsors
J.R. Linch, first vice commander of the Burleson American Legion Post 549, and
Blanche Habeck, president of the ladies auxiliary, offered congratulations and
financial sponsorship to Cathy Turner (center) recently. She will be a June contes-
tant in the Miss Teen of Texas Scholarship and Recognition Pageant. Turner is the
second Burleson girl to be accepted as a contestant in the pageant.

Turner enters pageant
A second Burleson teen-
ager has been accepted as a
contestant in the Miss Teen
of Texas Scholarship and
Recognition Pageant, to be
held in Austin June 15-17.
Pageant activities will be
held over the weekend at the
Austin Hyatt Regency,
where Cathy Turner, the 18-
year-old daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Don Turner of Burle-
son, will compete. The
pageant offers the winner a
$1,000 * scholarship to the
school of university of
choice? aricL.an all-expense
paid trip to the National Miss
Teen of America Pageant.
The latter pageant will
award a $15,000 scholarship
to the national titleholder.
Contestants will be judged
in several different cate-
gories in the June compe-
tition. Areas include the con-
testant’s personality as de-
termined by interview; per-
sonal development of tal-
ents, hobbies, interests; ser-
vice and achievement to
school and community ; gen-
eral awareness; scholastic
achievement; and ppise and
appearance in forrrtel "wear.-
■ The Burleson American
Legion Post No. 549 and the
American Legion Auxiliary
will equally be co-sponsor-
ing the Burleson High School
senior in pageant competi-
tion. Cathy and her mother
Ruth are members of the
Auxiliary, and Don Turner is
an Amer. Legion post mem-
ber. The Turner family have
been Burleson residents for
the past 16 years. They are
members of the First United
Methodist Church of Bur-
leson.

tically inclined,- Cathy has

Conservation is program
Mike Woodson, water re-
source planner and soil con-
servation specialist with the
Department of Agriculture,
was guest speaker for the
Jan. 13 meeting of the Town
and Country Garden Club of
Burleson.
The meeting was held in
the home of Mrs. Vernon
Pickard. Marie Justice pre-
sented the program and
made the introduction of the
guest speaker. Water conser-
vation was his topic at the
meeting, where 13 members
and two guests enjoyed the
program.
Members also made final
arrangements for their an-
nual flower show, to be held
March 9 at the Burleson
Public Libiary. Various re-
freshments were served with
coffee and hot tea at the
school years here. She is an
alto saxaphone player in the
BHS marching band and is a
drum major.
She has been a member of
the symphonic band and in
the jazz band at BHS. For the
past two years she has been
chosen a member of the Tex-
as Wesleyan College Honor
Band. This year she was also
a member of the East Texas
State College Honor Band.
After high school gradua-
tion, Cathy plans to attend
East Texas State where she
will major n the field of mu-
sic with a teaching specialty.
1st birthday
celebration
for Bradley
Bradley Martin, the son of
Richard and DJean Murdock
of 624 Black Hills, celebra-
ted his first birthday with a
party, at his home Jan. 28.
His birthday gift was a
first motorcycle. Guests in-
cluded Tammy Millard,
Shannahan Millard, and
several cousins. At the party
were Ken, Kenny, and Keith
Rice; Eric and Candy Cre-
cy; Kisha, Kasey, and Dan
Bryant; Ronnie and Tiffany
Crecy. Aunts attending in-
cluded Sandy Sanders, Bell-
via Rice, Nancy Bryant,
Trina Crecy, and Michelle
Crecy.
Bradley’s birthday cake
was made by his maternal
grandmother, Myra San-
ders. His paternal grand-
mother Pauline Murdock
was also present to help the
young man celebrate. Brad-
ley’s 2-year-old brother
Brandon was a special party
guest.

Club installs president
Gina Henderson, a sopho-
more at Burleson High
School, was installed as
President of Silver Arrow
Theta Rho Girls’ Club No. 16
Jan. 26 at a beautiful cere-
mony.
The refreshment table was
decorated with a hot pink
cloth, with white lace over it,
the new president’s colors. A
ceramic owl and Koala bear,
her emblems, were also used
as decorations.
Installation was under the
direction of Gretal Morgan,
District Deputy President
from Fort Worth. She was
assisted by Doris Cherry and
Ethel Carson of Kennedale.
Other elected officers in-
stalled were Vice President
Tana Arnette; Secretary
Beth Douglas; and Treas-
urer Teresa Red Eagle.
Appointed officers install-
ed included Marshall Dena
lennett; Warden Sharon En-
or; Chaplain Sherry Gib-
on; Inside Guardian Kim
ilerrick; Left Supporter to
President Christy Sayles;
Right Supporter to Vice
President Tammy Grogg;
and Left Supporter to Vice
President Melissa Hanks.
Due to illness Shirley Her-
riage, who will serve as con-
ductor, was unable to attend.
Chris Aylesworth was pre-
sented her Past President
pin and certificate from Car-
ol Curlee, Advisory officer of
the club. Miss Aylesworth
was also presented a United
Nations pin for having been a
youth delegate last summer.
During Aylesworth’s term,
six new members were initi-
ated.
Aylesworth presented her
officers with gifts. Hender-
son also presented the instal-
ling staff with gifts.
Mrs. ’Curlee and Grace
Red Eagle, the Advisory of-
ficers, were presented gifts
by the new president.
Henderson was presented
with an engraved gavel by
her mother, Geneva Hender-
son. She also received an
owl picture painted by Mrs.
Curlee.
There were 55 in atten-
dance with guests from Al-
varado, Fort Worth, Gran-
bury, Kennedale, Gatesville,
Joshua and Arlington.
The girls' next meeting is
Feb. 14, at which time they
are going to Silver Haven
Nursing Home to visit their,
“adopted grandmother.”
The girls meet on the sec-
ond and fourth Tuesdays of
each month, and the club is
open to girls age 10 to 18.

Girl takes two titles
A contestant in the recent-
ly completed Young Miss
Pageant, sponsored by the
Fort Worth Jaycees, 8-year-
old Crystal Keeton of Burle-
son took top honors in both
the Beauty and Personality
and in the Photogenic por-
tion of the contest.
Competition was held Jan.
28 at the Scott Theater in
Fort Worth. The pageant for
young girls is held annually
as an integral part of the
Miss Fort Worth Scholarship
Pageant. Age groups include
from 3-18-year-old contes-
tants. Winners receive a
crown, trophy, and flowers.
The petite Burleson miss is
the daughter of Ron and La
Nora Keeton of Burleson.
She is a second grade student
at Frazier Elementary. Her
14 year old brother Jeffrey
attends Pauline Hughes Mid-
dle School.
No stranger to pageant
competition, Crystal has
been entering pageants since
she was a toddler. She has
been awarded numerous ti-
tles, including the Little Miss
Cleburne (6-8 yrs.) in 1983.
She was also winner of the
National Photogenic compe-
tition held last June for the
Miss Starlight of America
pageant.

Soak dried shrimp in lVi

utes. Cut cabbage)into IV2-

inch square pieces, l^eat oil
in a wok over medium-high
heat one minute. Drain
shrimp well; discard water
Stir-fry garlic and softened
shrimp until garlic is golden,
about 30 seconds. Add cab-
bage. Stir-fry one minute.
Add salt and chicken broth.
Stir-fry three minutes or
until cabbage is soft. Serve
hot. Makes four servings.
