the water and sewer lines.
The route erf the lines; the size
requirements for the lines; the ex-

other considerations are yet to be

some type of agreement could be

money elsewhere if the Burleson
land did not become develop-

well stopped here and the dollar
values are right. I can see this
area becoming the new (retail
and office) center of Burleson if
we can get it off the ground.'

Elementary drug education

attempts are being made to in-
crease parental participation
THERE HAS TO BE a lot of
family involvement " she said
There are many things parents
car. do that they might not even
be aware of
Parents often have a sense of
false security where younger
children are concerned because
they believe n is expensive to be a
drug user and beyond the means
of an elementary student At
some point n can become an ex-
pensive habit but drugs are often
supplied at hnie or no charge tor
mmai ex perm er. tan on purposes
Stevens said
.Another thing she and other el-
ementary counselors would like
to see is more classroom teacher
involvement in the drug educa-
tion program They re already
involved, she said since one of
the essential elements has to do
with the negative effects of
drugs She would like to see
some additional ciimcuium
maienals adopted at the local
level for classroom use
“WE'D LIKE FOR two or
three other people on each cam-
pus to go through the program
Stevens said This takes an
awful lot of time, but I think it is
worth it "
The District Core Team meets
every other week and smaller
committees and groups meet in
between the district meeting,
she said
Back to Heather Stevens said
that one of the first things she
asks a child m her situation is
' Do you think you're really help-
ing your brother by not telling
your parents'’ She then explains
to the child that her brother is
doing something that could be
harmful to his health and talking
to her parents about it is not the
same as tattling
Regardless of the child s deci-
sion. she must be made to realize
that her brother’s actions are not
her fault and she need fee! no
personal guilt for any reason
Some children even feel a res-
ponsibility or obligation to try to
make members of their famiiv
stop smoking, she said.
The important thing, however
is that Heather no longer feel
alone m her frustrations. Whether
her name is Heather or Mark;
whether she has experimented
with drugs herself or is worried
about a family member whether
she needs information or sup-
port—she has a place to turn.
She has someone to talk to And
if none of the above apply she'll
still be exposed to information
and skills that may well keep her
from becoming a statistic of sub-
stance abuse
Because it does happen ai the
elementary level. But to some ex-
tent it can also be prevented
there. .And whenever that hap-
pens it s often because some-
