Early worehip
service added
at Kingswood
Beginning Sunday, Oct. 2,
Kingswood United Methodist
Church will add an early
worship service at 8:40 a.m.
to its Sunday activities. Sun-
day School will remain at
9:30 a.m. followed by anoth-
er worship service at 10:45
a.m.
This new early service ser-
ves two purposes. Kings-
wood worship attendance
has grown in the last year
making this addition neces-
sary for room. Also, our hope
is to meet the needs of those
who for one reason or anoth-
er cannot attend the later
service.
Kingswood Church doors
are open to all. It is located
at 335 Thomas St. (across
from Hughes Middle
School)

BY THE REV. DAVID ERSKINE
Holy Cross Episcopal Church
I was startled recently when I read that there are some six-
ty million Christians in the United States. I was startled
because the figure is less than one-third of the total popula-
tion of this country.
The sixty million Christians mentioned in the article did
not say that they were all church attending Christians. Many
call themselves Christians and have not set their feet in
church in years. Some of them will say, “I lead a Christian
life and that is all that matters. This even keeps me away
from the hypocrites that do attend church.” How judgemen-
tal and what a false sense of security.
Why is there this problem concerning the number of Chris-
tians in this country? It is not a new problem but an age old
problem. St. Paul encountered the problem in the churches
he established in the Western World. Paul says, in 1 Corin-
thians 1:23, “But we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a
stumbling block, and to Gentiles foolishness, but to those who
are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God
and wisdom.”
The Jews were looking for signs, and the Greeks relied on
wisdom or the intellect. To the Jews the signs that Jesus gave
were a stumbling block. To the Greeks the gospel story about
man’s salvation was considered madness. The same is true
for many people in this country today. They cannot accept
the signs and they cannot prove God through the intellect, so
they reject Him completely.
The Lord has reached out to those who are foolish; who are
weak; who are common and contemptible. These folk bear
witness to the redeeming power of Christ. They stand in the
trenches of life fending off the fiery darts of the enemy to pro-
claim the Gospel of Jesus Christ and Him crucified They
stand and witness, and the message does get through to
many.
The wisdom of man does not bring salvation. The quest for
signs does not bring salvation. The wisdom of man proved to
be a problem even in Old Testament times. In Jeremiah
9:23-24a we read, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Let not a wise man
boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his
might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let him who
boasts, boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that
