... FIND A LOVABLE PET
.. .through the Humane Society
Mjy dog just had six puppies
and we can't keep them. Where can I
bring them?"
"I found a cat on the side of the road. I
need to bring it to you."
These are two examples of the many
types of calls received on the Johnson
County Humane Society telephone line.
Unfortunately, the answers often have to be something like, "I'm sorry; we
don't have a shelter. We only have five foster families and they're all over-
loaded right now. We can run a free ad for you and place your name on our
adoption list, but that's about all we can do at.this time."
The organization is only a few years old in our county; only a handful of
people are involved with the concerns of abandoned or neglected animals.
Officers and volunteers aren't shy about saying they need the help of other
people who share their concerns.
People

Medical experts say people with
pets are less likely to suffer
from stress-related diseases
than people who live without
the healthy companionship
of a loving animal. These
findings come as no sur-
prise to pet owners.
They know how much a
good friend adds to
their lives. So give
yourself some of the
best medicine available.
Bring a dog or cat
home, and enjoy
your new pet in
good health.

Valerie Hauser, vice president
of the JCHS, commented on the
importance of the organization.
"There is no county-wide animal
control agency, particularly one that
works with the community to have
animals available for adoption," she
said. The only cities in the county
with their own animal adoption pro-
grams arc Burleson, Cleburne, and
Keene
Such a program for rural resi-
dents of Johnson County or those
who don’t live in one of those three
cities is an important goal of the so-
ciety—gelling together the aban-
doned animals found in the county
with families anxious to have a pet.
" Wc have a number of long term
goals, including ultimately building
or acquiring our own facility to serve
as an animal shelter for the county.
On a shorter term basis, we'd like to
establish a specific location which
can at certain, regular times during a
month be an area where families or
individuals can come and view ani-
mals available for adoption," said
Hauser.
The Cleburne resident and’Di-
' nah Goodman, who handles cruelty
investigations, arc both concerned
about the attitude which many people
have that animals are" disposable."
"People tend to think of animals
as outside pets, fringe members of
the family. The thinking is often 'if
something happens to this one, we'll
just get another,'" said Hauser. It's
pets
The Johnson County Humane Society has the most
adoptable pets in the county whether you are looking for a
dog or cat, full grown pet or baby. The society is the only
county wide pet organization and is currently seeking new
members and additional foster homes for those pets they try
to move into family settings.
