Shelter plans grand
opening, fund raiser
Several upcoming events are
currently being planned by the
board of directors for the
Johnson County Women’s Shelter,
located in Burleson.
| First on the agenda—though a
date has not yet been set—will be
an official Grand Opening event
:*for the newly-remodeled facility,
Complete with city officials and
other political dignitaries. The
old Burleson home, which has
been almost completely refur-
bished through donations of
materials, labor, and the time of
area citizens and businesses dur-
ing the past year, has been com-
pleted. The one exception is the
installation of fencing for both
the front and back of the pro-
perty, necessary to ensure security
for residents, staff, and volun-
teers at the agency.
| Director Freda Adams said at a
board meeting earlier in the
inonth that since the completion
J»f the facility, 22 women and
almost as many children have
utilized the shelter during crisis
situations of family violence.
Most of those residents have
been from outside of the
Burleson community, specifically
planned that way to cut down on
the probability of security pro-
blems until the fencing is in-
stalled. “Right now we're referring
Burleson women to shelters in
other communities,” she said.
In addition to a summer
Grand Opening of the shelter,
early in the fall there will be a big
fund-raising event for the local
facility. “We would like to involve
bikers and runners as well as
craft displays—all the activities
that people enjoy,” she said.
Summer planning for that spe-
cial day will be ongoing by com-
mittee members, so be prepared
for a call and request for assis-
tance with the organizataion of
the fund raiser during the next
few months as plans are being
made.
Also planned for organization
this year are several support
groups and seminars. A group of-
fering information and support
to abused women will be es-
tablished soon. "This will be a
community-wide, ongoing group,
free to all women in the com-
munity who would benefit from
attendance,” said Adams. Newly-
elected Burleson Ministerial
Alliance Auxiliary (BMAA) Presi-
dent Ruth Martin (formerly
director of Burleson's senior
resource center) will be organiz-
ing the support group for
women.
Harvest House Director Cathy
Coglan will also be presenting
financial planning seminars at
the shelter. She will be teaching
budgeting skills to women who
will be on their own, many for
the first time.

Robbie Goodnight, Johnson
County clerk, was elected as one
•pf eight area leaders for the
Texas County and District Clerk
Association last week during a
ptate convention in Longview.
| The clerk association is com-
posed of eight areas in Texas.
Goodnight will be heading Area
5, which includes Johnson,
Tarrant, and Dallas counties.
Goodnight will be responsible
for organizing monthly meetings
with the clerks in his area. In the
meetings, clerks will discuss up-
dated programs, new legislation
and new procedures in Texas
clerk offices.
Incidentally, the only other
Johnson County official to serve
as an area leader was a man
named Bishop in 1893, accord-
ing to Goodnight.
As area leader, Goodnight will
travel around the territory under
his jurisdiction and give lectures
to schools in special assemb-
lies.
"I feel great about it,” said
Goodnight "It overwhelms me
that people have confidence in
me to think that I can handle a
job like that. People in Johnson
County voted me back into office-
after the scandal and now my
peers, district and county clerks,
have elected me to serve.”
Earlier this year Goodnight
was accused ot stealing money
front his office by his department
employees. He was (ound inno-
cent of the charges made against
him in a trial which lasted
several days.

HERE HUGH!
SHOCK YOU.
But not if you follow these tips for working around electricity
while working around the house or on the job.
• Keep ladders and trimming tools away from overhead
wires.
• Call an expert if your electric meter or fuse box needs to
be moved.
• Don’t dig if you suspect there are underground wires-
call us first.
• Make sure you're clear of all wires when installing an
antenna; think about where it might land if it falls during
installation.
• Make sure all tools that run on electricity are properly
grounded and treat them with respect. . {
We don't mean to alarm you. But too many people become
accident statistics simply because they forget to be cautious
around electricity. And that's the shocking truth.
