Trashing The I la it it
Burleson High School head coach John Parker is trashing his habit
of dipping snuff this Thursday In honor of the annual Great
American Smokeout sponsored by the American Cancer Society.
GAS encourages tobacco smokers, dippers, and chevsers to quit the
habit for a 24-hour period each year. Parker promised that even a
pinch of snuff won't cross his lips Nov. 20.

THE PLAYERS SOON found
that dipping snull couldn't be

He quickly added, "Dipping is

Parker good naturedly agreed
to he adopted on Great American

cial adoption papers, I agreed
that, "As a nondipper, 1 will take

Parker on the path to diplcss-
ness For my part 1 will provide

ment, gum, fruit, and peanuts il

In return, Parker agreed to
hide smokeless tobacco cans,
plugs, and pouches, and all spit-
toons in the coaching office as
well as at home. That means his
regular routine ol putting a dip
m his mouth alter leaving the
house each morning will be dis-
rupicd this Thursday.
It also means he won't dip in
his office or at night as he reads
the paper on Nov. 20. (And it's

According to Dumas, dippers
and chewers face other undesir-
able side effects from the pro-
ducts such as nicotine addiction,
bad breath, and impaired senses
of smell and taste
“THERS’S NO QUESTION
that these products do harm,"
Dumas added. "That's why we re
hoping that all tobacco users will
join the Great American Smoke-
out—just to prove to themselves
that they can gel oft the hook
from any habit."
A new law enacted prohibits
television and radio ads lor
smokeless tobacco and requires
that warning labels be- printed on
all packaging starting next
year.
Coach Parker’s example of
kicking the tobacco habit lor one
day can be multiplied^) as many
dippers, chevvers, and smokers
as there are in Burleson. Tobac-
