safe—secure from the dangers of
the outside world, research just
doesn’t bear that out. Statis-
tically, With the exception of the
military and the police, the
family is the most violent social
group in the nation. A person is
more likely to be hit, beaten, or
killed at home than anywhere
else, and the assailant is more
likely to be a family member
than a stranger.
THE INFORMATIVE booklet
continues, "Various terms are
used to describe this American
tragedy: family violence or
domestic violence, and more
marital or spouse
specifically,
abuse, wife battering, child
abuse, and abuse of the elderly.”
Statistics reported are staggering.
Nationally, the FBI estimates
that one of every two women will
be physically abused at some
point in her life by a man with
whom she lives. Wife beating is
described by the FBI as "the
most under-reported of all
crimes."
Under-reported nationwide,
the best kept secret in Fort
Worth, a hidden tragedy right
here in Burleson —the incidence
of family violence doesn’t escape
any of us. But with caring
citizens and personnel within the
communities of Fort Worth and
Burleson, we can start cutting
down on the hidden aspect of the
crimes.
With the work going on now in
both cities to increase the aware-
ness of the Fort Worth facility
and the Johnson County Shelter
for Women and Children as well
as increase their capacities, more
battered women will know there
is a safe place for them and help
with finding solutions to their
problems.
