Book review
Computer graphics tome excellent
BY BYRON TRAVIS
Gulf Publishing Company’s newly
released oversize handbound, Com-
piilerffrnphia: ISetc Vinton* of
Form. Fantasy and Function, is a
coffee table type of book that many
people would never buy for
themselves, but will take great
pleasure in buying as a gift for their
friends.
The book is extremely attractive
both inside and out, with stunning
photographs on top-quality paper;
large, readable type; and thoroughly
professional layout and design. The
text is somewhat imposing, with an
abundance of technical jargon such
as “display algorithms...feedback
loop.. incremental refinement...vi-
siospatial functions...discrete pix-
els.”
Not to worry, however. You don’t
have to understand everything to be
able to enjoy the book Much of the in-
sider dope on computer graphics will
somehow rub off, and besides—
whether you savvy the stuff or not, all
of your friends will be extremely im-
pressed with your intellect when they
pick the book up from your coffee
table and browse through it
“Goodness, Helen, I never dream
ed you knew a thing about com-
puters!” they’ll say. Or, “Gosh,
Ralph, I thought all you ever read
was Sportn Illustrated and
Playboy.
The book contains a wealth of infor-
mation about the evolution of com-
puters and the value of same, as well
as information about the rapidly
developing field of computer
graphics. You may or may not be
eaten up with curiosity concerning
computer graphics, but I can prac-
tically guarantee you’ll be intrigued
by the dazzling examples that shine
forth from the pages of Com-
puterpraphia.
The book, which measures 83i by
11 'k inches and contains 150 pages, is
rather pricey at $24 95. That’s okay,
though, because you're not buying it
for yourself. After you’ve read it
eight or ten times, you’re going to
give it to your best friend for
Christmas.
Aren't you'7
