Handicapped people have long
suffered the social stigma that
equates disability with inability,
but for Lynn Dufva, vocational
adjustment coordinator at BHS, and
her many students, employability is
often a realistic goal.
Convincing potential em-
ployers that the student can
function safely and efficiently is
often the toughest obstacle, Dufva
said, describing her job. "My
objective is to make them (the
students) blend in," she said."
Dufva and her assistant, Mattie
Foster, have worked together in the
BHS program since 1976. The
vocational program was highlighted
at a recent Burleson Chamber of
Commerce meeting with a video
program.
The program featured several
BHS juniors and seniors under
Dufva's supervision as they are
working. Employers commented,
during the course of the program,
while the student performed his or
her job.
Kristi Kerr is one
students. Employed as a pharmacy
clerk at Eckerd's, she exemplifies
the kind of person Dufva hopes to
introduce to the business com-
munity.
"Kristi started as a camera
clerk,” said store manager Craig
Kerr. "Now she is a pharmacy
clerk. She assists customers and
runs the cash register,” among other
duties.
"She's an outstanding person
dedicated to doing her job to the
best of her ability,” Kerr said.
The accolades are consistently
glowing regarding Dufva's students,
reflecting her dedication) and
personal intefest in her students!
She is much more than just Ja
classroom teacher. Dufva's job
requires that she contact her
students' employers direedy at least
"If someone is having a
problem on the job, we discuss it,"
Dufva said., indicating that the
disabled student's most serious
problems are with "gossip, and
learning to work as team
members," She said. These are the
same problems experienced by most
of the American work force. Often,
the mentally handicapped person
has difficulty grasping the team-
player concept, she said.

Ther problems employers have
with non-disabled persons mostly
center around being late, not
showing up for work and a lack of
pride in the job. But Valerie
Ballard, manager of the Burleson
McDonald's, considers her special
ed employees, Chris Stasky and
Jody Burk, to be among the best in
attitude and job performance.
"They’re both dependable,
always here (on time). They have a
lot of pride in their job...I wish I
had more employees like them."
Some of Dufva's special ed
students make football mums for
Homecoming. Last year, her
students sold "between 75 and 100,"
mums, she said. "That's our main
money maker," she said. Making
mums and selling them to students
is also a "tying bond" for the
students, enabling contact with
other students, she said.
One of her educational tools,
needlepoint, is deceptively simple,
but very effective.
"Needlepoint builds attention
span,” she said. Some employees
tell Dufva that if one of her
students can needlepoint for at least
one hour they could have a job.
"Another thing is, it gives a
leisure time activity. It keeps them
from going home and just sitting in
front of the television.”
Among the most common
problems experienced by her
advanced students who gain
employment is being advanced
beyond scheduled levels.
"Generally, they do start out
and progress to higher positions.
The problem comes when there are
management changes over the
years, the person is blending in so
well that the (new) manager doesn’t
realize the original circumstances
(of disability,) she said.
