Social event... d.e.w.tell!
... .of the season

RUMOR AROUND TOWN has it that it will be the social
event of the season. . but you know how rumors are half-fact
and half fiction, but as the little birdies are singing on the
grapevine it will be the wedding of the year when Bernice
Belch says “I do's" with Jerry Boom Boom at eight o'clock
Aug 20 in Burleson Community Center with a reception to
follow as I hear it, the couple plan to announce their
engagement on Thursday and be married on Friday and
that's pretty fast . but it’s gotta be fast because it’s not only
the bridegroom that is reluctant so is the bride the
flower girl the ringbearer the maid of honor and the
bridesmaids even the “minister," Rev. Elmo Gantree,
who has agreed to perform the nuptials, has reservations
about this one There is, however, great jubilation in the
home of the bride-elect’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. M.M. Belch
(she's THE former Stella Pitlady). and they're planning a
Big To Do now that their last-daughter-at-home has finally
caught a Dive One Her fiance’s parents, Mr. and Mrs.
John Daniel Boom Boom (and she’s THE former Janis
Wearever) are laying low until the whole thing blows
over Mrs. Boom Boom says she isn t sure Bernice will
take as good care of her son as she has you know, ironing
his socks and sprinkling just the right amount of sugar on his
cereal Anyway, wedding plans are proceeding with Ber-
nice announcing members of the wedding party as Clifford
l.ou-Pez as best man Alena Magoo as maid of honor
lami Farkenparker, Teresa Chevrolet, and Billie Strib as
bridesmaids Marcus Dowa is one of the
groomsmen David Monster Brat is ringbearer and the
flower girl is adorable Regina Twinkletoes Candles will be
lighted by Marion m. Wick Since neither^ ot the families
have all that many friends to invite, they’re extending an in-
vitation to the WHOLE TOWN to attend. . .Bernice would on-
ly giggle when asked where she and Boom Boom planned to
spend their honeymoon. . There will be a slight fee for being
a wedding guest at the nuptial shenanigans. . .Like $1.50 for
adults and 75 cents for children . But the money will
definitely NOT be spent on a wedding trip. .It’ll all go to the
Burleson Chapter of the American Cancer Society. . be-
cause all members of the weddrng are such jolly, good fellas

MEANWHILE back to real people in real life . Those early
morning coffee drinkers who gather at the Burger Hut to
discuss problems of the city, the county, the state, the
nation and the world had an added attraction the other
morning when a huge earth-mover moved in to do its thing
for a drainage ditch along the SH174 access
road Everyone became Sidewalk Superintendents with
front row seats while they sipped their coffee. . Watching
someone else dig ditches with a huge machine is a fascinat-
ing procedure

CHIEF HOMER BARNES tells me there are no new leads in
the Potato Salad Case. A large, large pan of it was stolen,
swiped, or borrowed from the kitchen of First United
Methodist Church on the eve of the Chamber of Commerce's
monthly luncheon. But Chief Barnes says they're still in-
vestigating The Methodist Ladies, bless 'em, covered the
loss nicely by having another batch ready by the time lun-
cheon guests arrived at 12 noon . Food is such a delicious
subject and Star Staffers excel in that department Last
week we had an “auf weidersehn" party for Rhonda Moon,
whose been working in the composing room while a senior at
Burleson High School. She is taking a vacation with her
family at their lake cabin near New Braunfels before repor
ting for school at Texas Wesleyan University. . .For
Rhonda's party everyone brought snacking, food and it was
eat, eat, eat all day long Missy Edwards' mom sent along
a huge Chocolate Cake. . and Dene Yeamen made mouth
watering Lemon Cheese Bars and Carol Caughman
shared some of her Pickled Squash . just to name a few of
the gourmet-type snacks served. .

PARDON-MOI as Miss Piggy would say. . if you noticed a
glaring error in the cutline under the Business and Profes-
sional Women’s Club photo last Thursday about a scholarship
shower let me hasten to explain that I know the lady, Phyllis
Slaton, who was identified as Madie Allen . and the ex-
planation is simple. . Madie is Phyllis' mom . and the
Scholarship Shower for Teri Barham will be in Madie's home
and Madie, the hostess, and her daughter, Phyllis,
the new president of B&PW Club, will both be there

NEWCOMERS CLUB of Burleson are planning a Swim Party
for next Sunday afternoon from 5 p.m. on, at the home of Bet-
ty and Dalton Grisham on Bethesda Road Members, their
husbands and guests are invited Should be a fun affair,
because all you have to do is bring a swimsuit, towel and a
covered dish .There'll also be card games, “42 ", Bridge
and volleyball. . The club is gearing up for a year of ac-
tivities designed to help newcomers find their place in the
community . Victor Borgr proivided a delightful evening
for theater goers in Tarrant County Convention Center
Theater last Thursday. It was a cliff-hanging evening even
if you weren't seated in the balcony, arranged as only Borge
can do it, when he kept tickling your funny bone and you
wanted him to tickle the ivories. . During the first half of his
performance, the theater darkened and he sat down in a
Baby Blue spotlight to play “Clair de Lune”. just when his
audience had settled back to let the music wash over them,
he broke into “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad" followed
quickly by “When the Bear Comes Over the Mountain" He
got down to some serious playing in the latter part of the pro-
gram with a young Turkish pianist he is introducing around
the country. But even then Borge couldn't play it
straight, he kept trying to steal the spotlight from the
young pianist. . and the bit where they play a duo seated on
the same piano bench to play opposite ends of the piano was
hilarious Borge, of course, responded to a standing ova-
tion by performing his now-famous Talking Punctuation
skit It was a nice evening that will long be
remembered . until next week-' love, d e w
