takes memorable trip
to Soviet Union

Girls Choir performed there
recently Tneia \au was one of
the girls who was selected for the
Russian Romanian tour.
Tneia is a seventh-grader who
attends school in Crowley She
has been a member of the Texas
Girls Choir for four and one half
years Trawls with the choir have
taken her to Mexico in 1984. En-
gland and Scotland in 1985 Aus-
tralia this past summer and then
Russia
The choir was invited by Soviet
Russia through the Friendship
Ambassadors, an organization
established by Harry Morgan
that would facilitate tours by
music groups from the United
States to Eastern Europe to pro-
mote understanding between
people of those nations.
TRICH SAID We found out
we were going about a month
and a half before we were to
leave The group left D FAS Air-
port Dec. 25 and returned Jan
Choir members earned money
tor the mp through candy and
bake sales and a bazaar. .And
we also earned monev on our
own Tneia added.
Accompaning the girls' choir
was its leader Shirley Carter and
'-even, chaperones. Several tarruh
members also went on the trip
and two of these members were
Tncta s mother Sherry Ward and
21 year-old sister Stacey Nau.
Flow was it leaving or Christmas
day' We got up early that morn-
ing ate breakfast, and had
Chnstmas Then we went to the
airport My Chnstmas dinner
was a club ham sandwich and a
Coke Tr.cia said with a laugh.
Because of a 12-hour flight
uelav the group spent the night
tn New Aork. When arriving at
Bucharest Romania the air-
plane couldn t land because the
weather 'was rad It had snowed
a lot Me had to land at a military
base We sat or. the plane for two
hours and then we got off We all
stayed together tn this room.
Everyone was nice to us but it
was k_r.d or scar, because there
were guards and they had
machine guns Tr.cia said

the girl s mothers and tea.

Sightseeing in Bucharest in-
cluded visiting the Milage Museum
with its architecture showing
how peopie lived concert hall,
university central communist
headquarters and beautiful his-
tone buildings in Palace Square
the old section of the city which
included an old Roman church,
and other museums
Tneia said Me sang mostly to
kids at Pioneer Palaces They
were really excited Some of the
oiuer kids knew English and
they asked a lot of questions
about our country.
Her mother said. The Pioneer
Paiaces are very advanced high
tech day care centers
Tneia said. The kids sang for
us Thev sang a cappeila. and
they were very good
Exchanging gifts with the kids
they met was a very popular
event. Items they exchanged in-
cluded assorted puis and postcards.
The postcards the choir mem-
bers gave thertl were Te.xas
related. They liked the postcards.
But they really love bubblegum'
When we were in Romanta. a
tner.J was carrying a sack full of
gum and these boys saw her and
ran up to her saving Gum
Gum She gave them half of it."

The choir group traveled in
mu buses and stayed tn hotels.
Tneia said The hotels in
Romania were cold They only
turned on the heat at certain
times—like 8 am to 6 p.m In
Bucharest it was so cold I slept
with my coal on In some ot the
hotels there was hoi water but
some of the kids couldn’t get hot
water in their rooms."
The dinner meals consisted ot
potatoes, hard rolls, and meat
like stew meat, usually with
gravy Tneia said. I think they
put gravy on top so we couldn t
recognize the meat Most of the
time we were served hot tea to
dnnk. They didn t have Coca
Cola but once in a while we goi
Pepsi We never had milk We
were given buttermilk once and
only one girl even look a sip
Yuck! For breakfast sometimes
we had a jelly roll, scrambled
eggs, cheese, and hard >alam:

Glad To Be Home!
Tricia Nau holds the wooden carved figurine she brought back
from her trip. On Jan. 7 she returned from touring Soviet Russia
with the Texas Girls Choir. The 5r girls toured and performed Ln
Moscow and Leningrad. Tricia is a seventh-grade student who at-
tends school in Crowley.
