Food Bank opens at new location
Burleson among cities
served by facilities
Hundreds of balloons were re-
leased as thousands of invited guests
watched Saturday when the Food
Bank of Greater Tarrant County cele-
brated the Grand Opening of its new
facility, located at 2600 Cullen and
N. Vacek. An old-fashioned picnic
took place there from 12 noon until
about 4 p.m.
Fort Worth Mayor Bob Bolen
officiated at a short ceremony at 1:45
p.m. Underwritten by Kroger Food
Stores, the grand opening was emccd
by 1988 Canned Food Drive chair-
man Rosie Mauk. Other officials in-
volved with the event included Food
Bank President Mike Layton and
Food Bank Executive Director Pat
Mohlcr. The ceremony concluded on
a fun note, with Bolen and Mike
Layton, assisted by clowns and tap
dancers, participatinglnabox-pack-
ing contest.
About 5,000 guests were invited
to attend the grand opening and enjoy
hot dogs, popcorn, and ice cream
while clowns from Cowtown Clown
Alley; Hip Pocket Theatre mimes;
Graccy Tune Tap Dancers; and the
Razzmajazz Dixieland Band pro-
vided entertainment.
Reserve
officer
honored
Kenneth W. Hunter of Nicole
St., Burleson, joined represen-
tatives of every state, the District
of Columbia and Europe at the
Reserve Officers Association’s
63rd Annual National Conven-
tion June 21-24 in Houston,
Texas.
Hunter, a colonel in the Army
Reserve, assisted in making
decisions about the 120,000-
member ROA programs, projects
r and positions, and discussed
& legislative strategies relating to
national security. More than
1,500 attended the convention.
Honored at the banquet June
r 24 was Lt. Gen. Brent Scowcroft,
National Security Advisor to the
President, who was inducted into
- ROA's Minuteman Hall of Fame,
an honor shared with four for-
mer presidents of the United
States.
Also on the program were the
chiefs of reserves of all five
military services and other lead-
ing military and defense lead-
ers.
Guests were encouraged to bring
paper sacks filled with canned goods,
and Mike Stanley and Jose Guzman
of the Texas Rangers were present to
sign autographs. Grand Opening
guests were treated to tours of the
new 40,000 square foot facility. The
property, located in the Bailey Indus-
trial Addition, was purchased from
Jimenez Food Products, Inc. earlier
this year. It occupies the 2600-2626
block of Cullen Street in Fort Worth.
The Food Bank of Greater Tar-
rant County is a non-govcmmcntal,
non-profit clearinghouse which col-
lects and distributes food free of
charge to churches, agencies, and
other organizations that feed hungry
people. Since opening in 1982, the
Food Bank has distributed approxi-
mately 16 million pounds of food. A
member of Second Harvest National
Food Bank Network, the Food Bank
presently serves 164 churches and
agencies in a 10-county area.
Included among the counties are
Johnson, Bosque, Cooke, Denton,
Erath, Hamilton, Hill, Hood, Palo
Pinto, Parker, Somervell, Tarrant,
and Wise counties.
Members of the Food Bank
within Johnson County include the
BMAA Harvest House (Burleson),
Operation Blessing (Cleburne),
Eastern Heights Baptist Church
(Cleburne), Odyssey Harbor
(Keene), and Central Church of
Christ (Cleburne).
