Purpose is the key to a full life
CRAIG VIRE
BY CRAIG VIRE
Bethesda Baptist Church
One evening my young daugh-
ter climbed into my lap with one of
her toys. In her hands she held a set
of oversized plastic keys on a plas-
tic key ring.
As we sat together she pointed
to my pocket and asked to see my
keys. We examined each one as she
asked me what purpose each one
served. I_ explained that one opened,
my car, one opened my office at
church, one opened the door of our
home, and so on.
When we had talked about
every key, she held up her keys and
asked, "What do my keys do?”
I responded that her keys didn't
lock or open anything. After a short
pause and a thoughful look, she con-
cluded, "Daddy, my keys are not
real, are they?"
Somehow she came to an
awareness that while her toy was
composed of keys, they were not
7 like the country,' said Miller

way from Cleburne to Burleson.
But this is the country. I was raised
in it, and I liked it.
"I have many friends opposing
this, and even relatives. I hope you
will put yourselves in our shoes. 1
would close by saying that when
our county attorney and quality con-
trol office says the developer has
met the requirements, then we have
to vote on it."
Wava McCullough then took
the podium.
"MY HUSBAND and I and
children live adjacent to the pro-
posed Mandalady subdivision, and
we have opposed it for three years,"
she told the court.
"We have not been concerned
about the value of our property,
Mr. Miller. We live downstream
from this subdivision. We have
been concerned about our home
being flooded. We have had Mr:
Lan, an engineer, has done his re-
port and he has told you our home
S will be flooded," she said emotion-
| a,‘y-
"There are people in this
audience who also live downstream,
and their homes may possibly be
fiobded. I dori't know. But we know
that oufs will be flooded. We five
in a mobile manufactured home.
That has not been our concern. And
I know some of the other people on
711A and Waverly Road have very
modest homes. Some of them are
manufactured mobile, and they are

concerned about traffic and traffic
safety.
"Those issues — the real is-
sues here — have been side tracked.
Those are the issues. The issues
have not been the value of our
property going down, or* a mobile
home subdivision, or anything else.
I would like to put it into the record
again that1 the McCullough home
will be flooded if this subdivision
is developed as it is platted. It can
be replated and redesigned the way
engineer Jerry Lan had suggested,
and not flood the McCullough
property.
"And that’s what we're asking.
If it is replatted, if it is done
properly, Mr. and Mrs. Stalcup can
go ahead and develop their subdivi-
sion. The neighborhood will be per-
fectly happy. But we do not want to
be flooded out. It's a simple matter
of redesigning and replatting the
subdivision.
"As far as your subdivision
rules and regulations being met,
Mr. Misken has pointed out to you
many, many instances where you
are not meeting your subdivision
rules and regulations. I know the
Stalcups currently have a lawsuit
against the county commissioners
and can understand your position.
But the McCullough position and
the people downstream, we do not
want our homes flooded."
"IS THERE further discus-
sion?” Bridewell asked for the sec-
ond time. "If not, all in favor say
aye." All commissioners voted aye.
"There being none, Bridewell said,
"let the record show the motion pas-
sed.”
Ann Stalcup thanked the court
immediately after the affirmative
vote. "It has been a long hard pro-
less," she said. "I know it's been a
tough decision."
Preliminary plat approval was
awarded Mandalay subdivision
March 10, 1986. The approval was
rescinded Oct. 7 of the same year in
a split decision by the court, with
Pet. 2 and 1 Commissioners David
Russell of Joshua and Billy Roe of
Clebume voting for rescission. Pet.
3 and 4 Commissioners Jimmy
York of Burleson and Bob Aldridge
of Grandview voted for the approval
to stand. Bridewell, as county
judge, broke the tie with his vote to
rescind.
The JCCC has been active
since before the initial plat appro-
val, and has consistently filled the
courtroom
keys in the sense that mine were.
My keys were real in a fuller sense
than her's because mine accom-
plished a purpose.
Life can be that way. We can
experience life and yet fail to live it
to its fullest because we lack a
purpose for living.
Yet, Jesus gave His life on the
cross that we might know life at its
fullest.
5 Through His death, He makes
possible the forgiveness of our sin
against God. Through His sacrifice
He offers all persons the free gift of
eternal life. Through His resur-
rection, He brings meaning and pur-
pose for living to all who follow
Him as Lord.
This was the whole purpose of
His mission. Jesus said, "I am
come that you might have life and
might have it more abundantly."
Paul, the apostle, affirms that
life can be experienced in its full-
ness as Christ becomes a part of
our lives. He longed for the Ephe-
sians to "know the love of Christ
which surpasses knowledge, that
you may be filled up to all the full-
ness of God."
