Heberle conferred with
6th fellowship title in LA
Dr. James P. Heberle of Burle-
son lias been named a Fellow of the
American Academy of Family Phy-
sicians, the national medical associa-
tion representing 66,000 family phy-
sicians and medical students.
The Degree of Fellow may be at-
tained in cither of two ways: success-
ful completion of 600 or more hours
of accredited continuing medical
study, or achievement of diplomate
status in the specialty of family prac-
tice as a result of passing a certifying
examination administered by'the
American Board of Family Practice.
Plus the doctor must be a member for
at least six years.
Heberle has been an active
member of the academy for 20 years
and has been re-elected six times to
receive this honor, because of contin-
ued study.
Fellowship entitles the conferee
to use the tide, "Fellow of the Ameri-
can Academy of Family Physicians,"
or FAAFP. The degree was con-
ferred Sept 19 upon more than 500
members of the Academy in con-
junction with AAFP’s Annual Con-
vention and Scientific Assembly in
Los Angeles, Calif.
Fellowship candidates wore
academic robes and mortarboard
capts. They were recognized accord-
ing to state chapter and the oath of
Fellowship was recited en masse.
The AAFP, headquartered in
Kansas City. Mo., was instrumental
in establishing the medical specialty
of family practice in 1969.lt was also
a pioneer in continuing medical edu-
cation (CME), requiring its members
to maintain 150 hours of approved
CME credit every three years.

STEPHENV1LLE - Gina Mat-
ranga, a recent graduate of
Buneson High School, has been
selected to join the Presidential
Honors Program at Tarleton
State University. She will begin
the distinguished four-year pro-
gram this fall.
Dr. Mallory Young, an Associ-
ate Professor of English and
Director of the Presidential Hon-
ors Program, released the names
of its newest members this
week. .
Gina is the daughter of Tom
and Carol Matranga of Burleson.
She will be majoring in Chemis-
try at the University and plans to
pursue a career in chemical
research.
Tarleton President Dr. Barry B.
Thompson created the program
which recruits top ranking high
school graduates from across the
state. Students are chosen on the
basis of excellence in academics,
leadership, service and a capacity
for intellectual inquiry. The Pre-
sidential Honors Scholars re-
ceive a $2500 annual scholarship
along with many special aca-
demic qpportunities such as par-
ticipation in seminars conducted
by members of the Honors
Faculty and trips to national pro-
fessional meetings and confer-
ences.
According to Dr. Young, the
group of incoming students is ex-
tremely impressive. “I’m really
looking forward to working with
these students,“she said.’T know
they will be a wonderful addition
to the Honors Program anty to
the Tarleton community.”

WACO—Tina M. Haley and
Taryn S. Robertson both of
Burleson, are spring quarter
graduates from Texas State
Technical Institute (TSTI) in
Waco. The spring quarter gradua-
tion ceremony was held on
Friday, May 19 at the Waco Con-
vention Center.
Haley, a student in the Dental
Laboratory Technology program,
is the daughter of Pam Fisher of
Arlington, and a 1987 graduate of
Sam Houston High School.
Robertson, a student in the
Veterinary Technology program,
is the daughter of Sherry Fore-
man of Fort Worth, and a 1981
graduate of Southwest High
School.
TSTI, the only state-supported
technical college in Texas, is part
of a four-campus network with
additional facilities located at
Amarillo, Harlingen and Sweet-
water. TSTI-Waco has over 40 dif-
ferent fields of study.

Bonham of Burleson, is one of
850 Abilene Christian University
students named to the Dean’s
Honor Roll for the spring 1989
semester.
To be listed on the honor roll, a

grade in at least 12 semester
hours and earn a grade point
average of 3.45 or higher.
