Quick Art on Fridays at the
Hobby Hut, presented a
program on the technique
at the Feb. 18 meeting of
Burleson Arts and Crafts
Guild held in the First
Christian Church, 601 S.W
Johnson
She demonstrated the
use of a palette knife in do-
ing a Quick Art oil painting.
“Quick Art is fun and easy
to do,” she told her au-
diences. “And the best part
you can finish a painting in
only a day.”
One of her Quick Art
paintings was presented as
a door prize to Diane
Blackwood.
Club members had a nice
surprise, during the
meeting, when nationally-
known western artist, Bob
Molini, paid a visit. He will
be show judge for the art
show in April.
Receiving awards for
Paintings of the Month
were Jo Ann Bresciani with
a water color landscape,
first; Debbie Weaver, a

Awards went to Loreen
Givens with a ceramic vase
for first place; and to Lyn-
da Morgan with a wire
sculpture for second place.

paign for the club is still in

persons are invited to at-
tend the next meeting at 7

Christian Church.
This column is dedicated
to the Burleson Police '
Department:
Recently Officer Dorrita
Keefer spoke to some girl
scouts on a subject of great
importance. At St. Mat-
thews Presbyterian
Church, Cadette mothers
and daughters were
presented a program con-
cerning how to avoid and
avert rape situations. Of-
ficer Keefer first em-
phasized police are people
with families, hobbies,
likes and dislikes, and are
no different than you or I.
Police are your friends and
Good Guys Are Praised

are there to assist you.
They are unable to help
unless crimes, large or
small, are reported. Repor-
ting any action against you
or anyone in your family is
vitally important.
In the program, common
sense, safety in numbers,
and some simple escape
tactics were discussed.
Every mother is advised to
be sure that her daughter
never leaves the house
without a quarter
somewhere on her person
for a phone call.
(Remember that a dollar
will not fit into a phone coin
slot!) Officer Keefer also
showed an excellent movie
with a question ana answer
session following. The pro-
gram was excellent and
leaders of scout troops and
all youth groups are advis-
ed to check into the
possibility of having a
similar program offered to
your girls.
It is tragic that in our
society we must be sure
that our children are
taught techniques of self
defense, how to protect
their homes from theft, to
be afraid of strangers, and
most of all to distrust peo-
ple. Unfortunately, there
are people in this world
Think Thin Tops Club
Rewards Big Losers
without regard for others
or their lives (just look at
Iran) and we must protect
our children to the best of
our ability. The police are
there to help us. All too
often, we consider them
“bad” because they give
people tickets. But they are
there to insure that
everyone obeys the laws.
If, by speeding, you ac-
cidently hurt someone, it
would seem rather hollow
to say, you were in a hurry.
So, police try to enforce the
law and protect everyone.
It’s time to get to know
your policemen. Each of-
ficer is carrying football
cards with a member of the
Dallas Cowboy Team.
Every Monday the cards
are rotated and the officer
carries another “Cowboy”.
All a kid has to do is ask a
policeman for a card.
If you would be in-
terested in various pro-
grams that the Burleson
Police Department offers,
give them a call. They are
there to serve you. We are
very fortunate to have such
a fine staff in our communi-
ty. They are doing a good
job but as our city grows it
becomes increasingly
necessary for all of us to
help. If you see a crime be-
ing committed - do
something - call your police
and give your statement.
Remember, they are only
people trying to help you.
Let’s work together to
stamp out crime in our city.
Together, we can make our
community a much better
place to live. Without fear,
for our children, for
ourselves. Thanks,
Burleson Police, for being
there.
Auxiliary Learns More
About Crippling Disease
Briaroaks Volunteer Fire
Department Auxiliary
learned a little more about
arthritis following a talk
and film presentation by
Mrs. Martie Cook of Fort
Worth at the auxiliary’s
meeting last Monday in the
Briaroaks Fire Hall on
Ward Lane.
Mrs. Cook, a represen-
tative of the Arthritis Foun-
dation, showed a film
“Wherever You Are” nar-
rated by Henry Fonda, a
victim of arthritis.
Mrs. Cook informed her
audience there are 71
chapters of the Arthritis
Foundation in the United
States.
“Twenty-seven counties
form one chapter of the
Northern Texas Region,”
she said. “Headquarters
for the foundation is in
Atlanta, Ga.
"Arthritis is a disease of
the joints and surrounding
tissues,” she said. “This
disease effects 20 million
, people inthe United States,
which is almost the popula-
tion of New York City and
Los Angeles, Calif, combin-
ed.”
She said 250,000 children
have it and babies are born
with it.
Mrs. Cook said she has
several people in the
Burleson area interested in
volunteer work and if
others are interested they
may call her at 926-7733.
She also said the founda-
tion has equipment for loan
to persons affected with
this disease.
Mrs. Bobbie McAlister
was hostess during this
social hour.
■ During the business
meeting, conducted by Bet-
ty Reed, auxiliary presi-
dent, appreciation was ex-
pressed to all the ladies for
their help in making the
Sweetheart Banquet a suc-
cess.
Plans were approved to
purchase 10 new dining
tables for use in the Fire
Hall with the money from
the banquet.
Announcement was
made of a Bake Sale to be
held March 29 and a Fish
Fry on April 18 at the Fire
Hall.
The Next meeting will be
7:30 p.m. March 24 in the
Fire Hall. All ladies in the
Briaroaks Community are
invited to attend.
Eleven members
“weighed in” at the Mon-
day night meeting of Think
Thin Tops Club in
Kingswood United
Methodist Church.
The meeting opened with
the Club Pledge.
A net loss of 22h pounds
was recorded by the 11
members attending.
Martha Holt received a
red rose for a two-weeks’
consecutive loss.
Edith Ladd, Martha Holt
and Pam Fox tied for Best
Loser of the Week with a
three-pound loss each.
The remainder of the
meeting centered around a
rap session during which
members discussed pro-
blems and solutions to los-
ing weight.
Plans were discussed for
an Awards Banquet to be
held in April
Serenity Prayer
repeated in unison closed
the meeting.
Members were reminded
to bring a piece of fruit for
the traveling Fruit Basket
to be given to the best
Loser of the Month at the
next meeting.
