Burleson’s Allison Gray made basketball all-district for
the third straight year in the 4A 8 all-district girls basket-
ball team selected by coaches
Shari Sherrill and Lisa Barr made the second team for
the Elkettes.
Arlington, which won the right to represent the district
after a playoff with Sam Houston and Richland, took most
of the top honors
The Colts had the player of the year in Kathy Hickey,
the offensive player of the year in Sharon Valentine and
the defeasive player of the year in Michele Menge Selena
Mills of Arlington was also named to the first team.
Sam Houston had the league’s rookie of the year in
Judith McGill and also had Lisa Sanders named to the
first team.
Dana Beckelman was Richland’s lone first team pick
and Marie Johnson of Haltom completed the selections
Gray was also selected all-district in volleyball earlier
in the year
Gray was team leader in scoring with 332 points and a
13 4 average, top rebounder with 220 and tops in steals
with 89
Barr had an 8.7 scoring average and Sherrill, 6.6 points
per game. Other scoring averages for starters were 5 2 for
Jan Smith and 4.4 for Kim Kerr
Kerr and Smith followed Gray as top rebounders with
season totals of 183 and 163.
Barr was the leader in assists with 99, and Gray had 60
Barr followed Gray in steals with 60 and Smith had 26.
Burleson finished with a 7-5 district record in a tie for
third place overall.
The Elkettes beat Sam Houston-the team with the best
record--in their season finale but lost a coin toss to get into
a playoff for the district title.
Many felt the Elkettes, who began the season with only
one returning starter, were the district’s best team by the
end of the season.

eluded parts of Texas are
included on the U S. Fish &
Wildlife Services's “Ten
Most Endangered Species
in North America’’ list.
The four are the black
footed ferret, red wolf,
Houston toad and Atlantic
Ridley sea turtle.
Of the four, only the
Houston toad appears to be
maintaining a viable
population, even though the
USFWS calls it “the conti
nent’s most endangered
amphibian.”
An estimated 1,500 toads
still live in scattered
lowland habitat in East
Texas, and the federal
agency has designated por
tions of Bastrop and
Burleson Counties as
critical habitat Habitat
destruction and fragmenta-
tion are blamed for the
decline of the species.
The red wolf formerly
ranged throughout most of
the eastern half of Texas,
but the species has
retreated to a small mar
shy grassland area in the
state’s southeast corner
Biologists estimate the ap-
proximately 50 red wolves
still in existence there are
the sole remnants of a
population which formerly
ranged as far east as the
Mississippi River and
beyond.
Although hilnting and
trapping probably were
factors in the red wolf’s
decline, habitat loss,
disease and interbreeding
with coyotes and domestic
dogs probably have been
even more detrimental in
the past few decades.
America’s most en-
dangered mammal, the
blackfooted ferret, was
believed to have ranged in
prairie dog town areas of
west Texas. Massive
poisoning of prairie dogs,
on which the ferrets depend
for survival, apparently ex-
tirpated the ferrets. Some
unconfirmed sightings
have been reported in the
Panhandle area
The Atlantic Ridley
never was common in
Texas, although some
reproduction is believed to
have occured on the
beaches at South Padre
Island. The agency said as
many as 40,000 of the giant
sea turtles came ashore
each year to lay their eggs
along the eastern coast of
Mexico in the 194us
Because of predation on the
nests by humans and
animals, the number cur-
rently is less than 300.
The USFWS told the
Texas Parks and Wildlife
Department that popula
tion alone is not the sole
criterion for determining a
species’ degree of en-
dangerment. Contributing
factors include the ability
of a population to
reproduce itself, threats to
the population or its
habitat, availability of food
supplies and the degree to
which the species responds
to conservation measures

Plainview Man
Top Conservationist
The Texas Outdoor
Writers Association’s an-
nual “Conservationists of
the Year” awards have
been bestowed on a Plain-
view sportsman and a
Texas Parks and Wildlife
Department official.
Joe Don Scott of Plain-
view was cited for his role
in formation of Pheasants
Unlimited, Inc. in the
Texas Panhandle area.
The organization has en-
couraged the establish-
ment of better pheasant
habitat by raising money
used to pay landowners for
maintaining portions of
their land in food and cover
plants for pheasants.
The organization is
similar in structure to
Ducks Unlimited, Inc.,
which raises money to
enhance duck habitat in
Canada and Mexico.
Horce Gore received the
other Conservationist of
the Year award for his
years of work in upland
game programs.
T.O.W.A. officials said
Gore, who now heads the
department’s white-tailed
deer program, made
significant contributions
particularly in the restora
tion of the eastern wild
turkey to East Texas and
management of the Rio
Grande turkey resource in
the western half of the
state.
