Only One Parent Can
Claim Tax Dependent
Separated and divorced
parents should check their
tax return instructions
before claiming children as
dependents, the Internal
Revenue Service said.
Each child can be claimed
on only one parent’s Federal
tax return. Generally, the
parent with custody of the
child for the greater part of
the year is allowed the
dependency deduction.
However, there may be
exceptions to this rule,
depending on the terms of
the divorce or custody
decree or other written
agreement and the amount
contributed to the child’s
support by the parent
without custody.
Addiional information is
offered in two IRS publica-
tions, Publication 501,
“Your Exemptions and Ex-
emptions for Dependents,’’
and Publication 504, “Tax
Information for Divorced
and Separated Individuals.”
Gary Emery, Place 3
School Board Candidate
Last Thursday I declared
my candidacy for trustee,
Place 3, in the upcoming
school board election April
5th. My stated primary con-
cern is to provide quality
education for our children.
Presently Burleson’s school
system is equal or superior
to most area districts
however we are facing a
serious problem in maintain-
ing this status.
We are losing experienced
quality teachers to private
industry, not because the
teacher has lost a desire to
teach but simply in order to
provide a better standard of
living for their families. To
retain our teachers and hire
new qualified teachers we
must offer realistic pay.
. Presently a teacher equip-
ped with a masters degree
and four years experience
can expect to earn $12,270 in
Burleson for the 1979-80
school year. In contrast, a
skilled carpenter will earn
150% or over $18,000 in the
same time period and
generally work fewer hours
overall.
To stem the loss of
teachers I suggest it is time
we face reality concerning
pay levels. The state
treasurer statedly holds a
tremendous surplus yet is of
fering only a 9% or less in-
crease in salary of which
some $300 a year is a
legislative increase based on
service. I feel we as a com-
munity should support our
teacher’s efforts to obtain
pay levels justified to the
jobs they perform. I want to
keep good teachers in our
system. I want our children
to have good teachers
available.
My personal background
includes administrative ex-
perience dealing with budget
preparation, production
scheduling, manpower
analysis and bid prepara-
tion. I have experience deal-
ing with constractors and
suppliers in the building
trade where I am presently
employed with Fox and
Rendon Area Residents
To Discuss Water Woes
RENDON—Residents of the Rendon
area served by Tarrant Utility Co. have
scheduled a meeting tonight to
discuss what to do about a 207 percent
rate increase on their water bills.
Tarrant Utility serves rural areas in
portions of Johnson, Tarrant, Parker
and Hood counties.
Bob Steinman, elected interim
president of a newly formed group
known as the Rendon Community Coun-
cil last Monday night, told The Star that
the meeting was “to discuss what we
need to do to eliminate Tarrant Utility
or the 207 percent rate increase.”
At this point, he is in favor of
eliminating both,, he said, and either
forming a coop to supply water, trying to in-
terest an existing coop to take over
Tarrant Utility customers or else
building a completely new water
system.
Several existing coops have been con-
tacted and there is apparently some in-
terest in acquiring the large territory
now served by Tarrant Utility.
Bethesda Water Coop of Burleson is not
among those interested, however.
BETHESDA MANAGER Clarence
Moore said Friday that he had been
contacted by representatives of the
Rendon group but that Bethesda was
definitely not intersted.
Final determination of Tarrant’s pro-
posed rate increase probably won’t be
made by the Public Utilities Commis-
sion for another 45-60 days, but in the
meantime, those rates have been tem-
porarily approved for the interim
period and are currently in affect.
Tarrant Utility Co. General Manager
Jesse Graham said he would have no
comment on rate demand requests until
after the public utility commission
makes its ruling.
Water bills ranging from $100 to $750
per month are not uncommon, said
Steinman, who pointed out that this is
not even a peak time of year for water
consumption. “No one is even watering
their lawn yet,” he said.
At tonight’s meeting, set for 7:30 at
the Chip N Danceland on FM 1187, the
group will electa permanent slate of of-
ficers, approve a set of bylaws and sign
petitions to be presented to the PUC.
Also sure to be discussed are plans
which are being drawn up to seek
revocation of the firm’s operating
license and to have its ownership
transferred to an existing or newly
formed coop.

It has long been known
that, in times of extreme
stress, the human body is
capable of feats of unbe-
lievable strength. This was
documented in 1960 by a
123-pound woman in
Tampa, Florida. The woman,
Mrs. Maxwell Rogers, lifted
one end of a 3,600 pound
car after it had fallen on top
of her son when the jack
holding up the car slipped.
She suffered only a few
cracked vertebrae as a result
of her efforts.

The oldest surviving
working clock, still ticking
away, is at Salisbury
Cathedral in Wiltshire,
England. The works date
from 1386, possibly earlier.
When restored in 1956, it
was estimated that the clock
had ticked more than 500
million times.

Sometimes a watch can
withstand severe punish-
ment and still come up tick-
ing. Such was the case with
Donald Belcher of Hunt,
West Virginia. He lost his
Timex while at work in a
coal mine. Two months
later, the Timex was found
in a roadway. Heavy equip-
ment and machinery had
run over it many times, hut
when Belcher wound it, it
started ticking again and,
he reports, still keeps good
time.

The Orient must he do-
ing something right. A
Korean boy, Kim Ung-Yeo
Seoul, has the highest I.Q.
ever recorded: 210. And the
highest average I.Q. of a
national population is 106.6
for the Japanese.
