The Burleson Police Depart-

the position of crime prevention
officer in October, and a 10-year ve-
teran of the BPD was selected re-
cently for the position.
Officer Paula Ibsen was chosen

different in law enforcement," Ibsen
sa d of her decision to switch gears
from patrol officer to the educating
role.
Ibsen recently went to Austin
for a two week school (100 hours
of training) of the Texas Crime
Prevention Institute, which follows
die curriculum of Southwest Texas
S^te University in San Marcos.
Ibsen joins a division of two
c<Ticers, Lt Bob
T'vRE Officer Randy Hicks. The
community services division was
officially set up in February of this
year when Burleson Police Chief
Roger Rountree made some changes
in the department to better serve the
community.
Tm excited about providing a
crime prevention component to die
department Although we had crime
prevention in the past it was
assigned to various people so this
shoukl be more efficient and effec-
tive," Rountree said.
"The definition of crime preven-
tion is the anticipation, recogni-
tion, and appraisal of a crime risk
and the initiation of action to re-
r ' «ve or reduce it" Ibsen said.
Crime prevention teaches the
t j.ieral public how to be aware of
rT^
where, and if they were they,
wouldn’t recognize a stranger in the
neighborhood but a neighbor
would," Ibsen said, stressing the
need fix’ citizens to be involved.
Some of Ibsen's high-concern
areas in crime prevention include
neighborhood watches, home and
business security checks, working
with children about stranger danger
and good touch/bad touch, date rape,
bicycle safety, operation identifi-
cation, fingerprinting children, and
crimes against the elderly. Her ma-
jor emphasis right now is on neigh-
borhood watches.
"As these programs develop,
there will be more publicity on
how the community will benefit
from them," Ibsen said.
She also helps with tours of
die police station and helps Mc-
Gruff tie Crime Watch dog find his
way around.
Ibsen is not afraid of switch-
ing getrs because she has done it
before. She began with Burleson in
1979 as secretary to the police
chief, who was then Don Maxon.
After one year, Ibsen became a
police dispatcher, where she stayed
for four years. At that time the po-
lice dispatchers were certified offi-
cers who went through the acade-
my. When Burleson stopped certify-,
ing dispatchers as officers, Ibsen de-
cided to use her training as an
officer on the streets. She has been
on patrol in Burleson fix the last
five years.
Ibsen wasn't a stranger to the
law enforcement field. Her father,
Paul Busby, was a trooper with the
